Biography

"You want to know how I met my mate? Go bother her instead. Oh? She told you to ask me? I guess...in that case...."

A coatl sat alone on a rock, using his talons to sharpen a stick. Other dragons played nearby, chasing each other and laughing. None invited the coatl to join them. He wouldn't have accepted if they did.
Three other coatls waltzed by, snickering when they caught sight of him. The one closest to him casually stuck out her tail and knocked the stick out of his talons. "Oops. So sorry," she oozed. She didn't look sorry at all.
"Carmine. What do you want?" The coatl on the rock growled, his eyes narrowed dangerously.
Carmine rolled her eyes at him. "I don't want anything, silly. Mother asked me to check up on you."
He glared at her. "I don't need a dragonet-sitter."
"It wasn't my idea," she said, checking her talons. She gracefully sank to the ground, her back pointedly turned toward him. Her companions quickly sat down beside her.
"Zaire. Gerek," acknowledged the first coatl grudgingly.
"Hiya, Tark!" Gerek sauntered over to him and draped his tail over the coatl's shoulder. "How's life?" His words were friendly enough, but his eyes concealed thinly veiled malice.
Tarkin shook the tail off him. "My name is TARKIN. Don't call me Tark," he said firmly, nostrils flaring.
"I still don't understand why that bothers you."
Tarkin ignored him and went back to sharpening his stick.
Gerek eyed him. "No, really. Why does it? And while we're at it, why are you even still here?"
"Where else would I be?" Tarkin slowly replied. He wrestled to keep his temper under control. His blood was beginning to boil.
"In case you haven't noticed, nobody here really likes you. Not even your own family. And you've made it abundantly clear you don't like any of us." He turned to Carmine and Zaire. "You agree, right?"
Carmine nodded without even looking up from shining her scales. Zaire's eyes darted nervously from Gerek to Tarkin. "He's right," she said apologetically. "I'm sorry."
Tarkin's thoughts reeled. Feelings violently swirled around inside him, jostling to come forward. Pain, sadness, fear. Anger.
"What do I do?" He moaned.
"Leave."
Tarkin looked up into Garek's face, searching it for any signs of pity. It was blank and emotionless. The anger he'd been struggling with suddenly burst over, hot as the Flamecaller's volcanoes.
"Leave? LEAVE?! And go where? Who would accept me?" he raged, pacing back and forth atop the rock.
Gerek smirked. "That's your problem."
Tarkin snapped. Without another moment's thought he hurled himself down onto Gerek, his sharp talons digging into the dragon's flank. "ACK!" Gerek squawked. "Get off! Ouch!!" By now, many more dragons had noticed what was happening. They'd been doing their best to ignore it, but as Tarkin leapt on Gerek, dragons rushed forward to break the fight up.
Still screeching and clawing, the coatl was dragged off Gerek and thrown into the closest cave. A few minutes later a Skydancer joined him. Tarkin, tightly curled into a ball on the floor, didn't notice her until she spoke. "You know fighting is forbidden," she chided him softly.
Tarkin stiffened. As quickly as he could he straightened himself out and crouched low in front of her, head bowed. "I-I'm sorry, Vera," he stammered.
She bent her delicate head close to him. "I wish that was true," she murmured sadly in his ear. "I've given you so many chances. You've truly tried your best, I know. But something in you never could change. Tarkin, I hope that if we meet again, you'll be able to forgive me."
Dread lodged in his throat as he realized what was happening. Cringing, he waited for the words that would change his life.
"As leader of the Jasmine Clan it is my duty to punish those who disobey the rules. From this day forward, Tarkin, you no longer belong here," she said, her tone heavy. "If you are ever seen in the territory again you will be chased out. Let it be known to all!" Vera announced, her voice sweeping over the crowd of dragons gathered by the cave entrance. A murmur of acknowledgment rose from them.
Sound seemed to die away. Tarkin could see the mouths of others moving but couldn't make out any words. He didn't notice when he was gripped by two dragons and frogmarched to the lair enterance. He didn't see Zaire sadly staing at him as he was pushed out, or Gerek, with a triumphant gleam in his eyes.
Blindly, Tarkin stumbled away from everything he'd ever known. After walking for hours he sank, exhausted, behind a bush. He was asleep in seconds.
"Hey. Hey, are you ok?"
A face swam into view, blue with golden eyes that shone with concern.
"Who...who are you?" Tarkin rasped.
The dragon smiled. "My name's Turquoise." She was a coatl, like him. "Here, you can eat this." She laid a fish and some shrimp at his feet. Hungrily he tore into the food, relishing the smooth way the seafood slid down.
"Are you looking for a new lair? She asked him. "We're pretty far away from anything that counts as civilization."
He nodded yes.
She brightened. "So am I! We should travel together. Two is better than one, as the saying goes. Oh! By the Lightbringer. I don't even know your name."
"I'm Tarkin."
"....and we've been together ever since. Happy now?"
