General of Clan Amarayne

B I O G R A P H Y

Long, long ago, when the clan of Amarayne was just getting its start and the progenitors had sired the very first clutch of the clan, a young guardian hatchling led her sickly brother to the Amarayne food stores, hoping that a full belly would give him the strength to fight off his illness and keep going. She had already lost a tiny sister to the tragedy that separated her from her parents, and she was determined that her little brother would live even if that meant she starved herself providing for him. She was not exactly stealthy as a clumsy and thin hatchling, and made enough noise to alert the sleeping parents that an intruder was in their food stores. By the time she realized she'd woken them, it was too late. She faced off against the adults, putting herself between them and her brother and demanding that they offer her food and let her be on her way. There was pity on their faces, however, and they insisted that she and her brother remain there until they regained their strength. Kahlena reluctantly agreed, sealing her fate to never leave this place.

Kahlena's strength, determination and dedication to protecting her family and her clan made her the clan's first and most celebrated warrior. Her gift for seeing her opponent's weaknesses and where best to strike them made her a force to be reckoned with in the battlefield and in one-on-one spars. Though she prefers physical combat her magic is powerful as well, enhancing her physical strength and her senses and able to hold up well against mage opponents. She was once the teacher of basic and advanced combat in addition to being Amarayne's General, but relinquished the teaching job to one of her best students in order to fully devote herself to running the Guard.

Her brother Erithane is her ward, but due to his comfortable job as clan Scribe, he needs little guarding. The two get along together well, though he sometimes gets annoyed with her coddling and is relieved when she returns to managing her elite Guard. These dragons are hand-picked by Kahlena for the position, getting better wages, training, and status that the normal guard do not. They are like her family, and losing one is a bitter blow. She found this out the hard way during the attack on Amarayne not long ago, losing one of her best and brightest to the invaders when she tried to guide a small group of dragons to safety. Kahlena mourns her, but praises her sacrifice, as it is thanks to her that many dragons survived the onslaught.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Kahlena is fierce in battle, never standing down even if the odds are stacked against her. That being said, she fights smart. She will find and use any advantage she can to severely hinder an opponent she can't brute force into submission. Years of observation and practice have given her wisdom in the ways of fighting, and there is no one so skilled in all the clan.

Too often she has appeared cold and aloof to her fellow clan members, if not downright bossy. She simply likes to see the clan run as efficiently as possible and her likability can suffer for this. When not on the job she has a hard time getting out of General Kahlena mode, but when she does let loose, she shows how fun-loving and warm she can be. Most of her Guard know this already as well as her two sparring partners, but to the younger members of the clan or to strangers, she is usually written off as a stick-in-the-mud.

Kahlena doesn't form romantic attachments. It's not that she finds such things stupid or beneath her, she just doesn't bond with others that way. Her friendships, however, are forged in fire and she will defend them to the death, even if that friend has hurt or betrayed her in the past. That doesn't mean she won't knock you around afterward, but becoming friends with Kahlena is securing a powerful lifelong ally, should you be able to do it.
