In the hierarchy that governs the cave systems, Thursday reigns dominant, but not by any natural means of succession. On the cusp of fledglinghood it became astoundingly clear that she would grow larger than any other dragon the caves had seen before, and with that came an aggressive streak a mile wide. Maturity and her first mating season only fueled her inclination toward dominance - the scales and flesh of any male attempting to mate her was met with her powerful jaws, and in a bout of aggravated temper, she mauled and killed the clan leader's mate.
Before the end of the season, Thursday had both struck fear into all who inhabited the caves and chased off their once-venerated leader, who was too overcome with grief to resist. For a century after, what those old enough to remember call 'the darkest age' in hurried, muted whispers, the enormous guardian presided supreme over the dragons of the cavern crags. With time, she only grew larger, more ferocious, never taking a true mate, but faux-breeding with the healthiest females during every mating season. She became known as 'egg eater' and 'bone gnawer' to those who feared her, for her size brought forth an insatiable hunger she quelled with the eggs of those she wished to punish, and as those few males who thought they could best her can tell, she enjoyed ripping chunks out of their hides. Relief for the clan only came at the start of another year's mating season, when the caves were invaded by a travelling conclave of outsiders. The largest of them, the beautiful and archaic priestess Onvaki, used a spell that invoked the plaguemother to seduce and form a mating bond with Thursday. The priestess had become obsessed with achieving the ferocious love of a monster, and she did - for once the dregs of the spell had cleared, the monstrous guardian became lucid through her bloodlust for the first time in decades. It did not take long after for her to fall in love with the priestess on her own terms, and allow her to entertain the duties of clan leader that Thursday never bothered with. Presently, Thursday keeps to the depths of the blackwater pool in which their nest resides, and no dragon dares disturb her should her instinct-driven aggression once again take hold. |
