Kage was welcomed into the Dandelion Dwellers clan alongside her twin sister, Ardor. Though much different from her sister's desire for a cozy life, Kage is very ambitious and immediately sought to prove herself in combat. Some members of the clan were put off by her readiness to brawl, not quite understanding what she was trying to accomplish, but Valen, the Troop Leader, remained patient with her.

Kage quickly became an esteemed troop, specializing more in combat with other dragons than hunting. Her desire to prove herself never quite fades, though those around her help her understand that she already belongs.

Sparkles is too oblivious to do so, and is initially a little frightened by Kage, but quickly forgets about that when Kage encounters the Murderous Spirit that Sparkles had accidentally summoned by poking her nose where it didn't belong. Sparkles begs Kage not to tell anyone (especially her mother Galestrike), to which Kage reassures her and instead offers to help. Sparkles doesn't catch on that the brawny newcomer has taken a liking to her, and Kage's social skills are too poor to be of any help in her pining.
