There was a time when Breakdown lived for battle. He was born gruff and stout, without a single scrap of fear in his heart. His parents watched with pride as their headstrong hatchling grew into a strong and principled adult who believed in making his own way in the world. His desire to rule his own fate led to an interest in combat, and he eventually matured into a stoic and solemn warrior. The roughness of his youth gave way to confidence and poise unrivaled by any of his peers, and he soon became the clan's finest warrior in his generation.

He was fierce, that much was certain. He lived by laws of efficiency and pride. There was a certain callousness about him that worried his peers and terrified his enemies. He was not cruel, but he didn't hesitate to do what he believed needed to be done. He became well known for the frightful red mask that he wore into battle, and the clan's enemies would scatter at the sight of it. Disciplined, responsible, and pragmatic to his core, he would have been a natural leader if such a thing appealed to him. While he prided himself in his self-sufficiency and strength, he simply had no interest in leading others. He preferred to be responsible for his own actions only, and he regarded the management of others as nothing more than a needless distraction from his own path.

For the same reason, he had few friends. He preferred to keep only himself as company. In his years defending the clan from it's enemies, he'd learned to restrain his emotions in such a way that sometimes,he feared he might be losing them. He concerned himself so much with the safety of his clan that he forgot what it was like to be a part of it, and quietly resigned himself to loneliness. He believed that his purpose was to protect.

That was a sad time in his life, but like most dark times, it passed. He eventually courted a mate, a feisty pearlcatcher named Knockout. They met by chance, and the pearlcatcher's charm combined with a familiar forwardness immediately attracted Breakdown. The rest of the clan was surprised, but in Knockout, Breakdown had finally found someone capable of scaling the sturdy walls that he used to protect himself. Breakdown still wasn't much of a talker, but now that he had someone who understood that his silence was not an absence of kindness, he gradually found it easier to rejoin the clan's social circles. He'd never been too far away, but after a lifetime of focusing on only a single path, he was finally starting to learn that it was entirely possible to take detours.

Eventually, Breakdown and Knockout adopted a lost hatchling, who they named Vulture. The newest addition marked a new turn in the pair's lives, but Breakdown couldn't have been happier. As stoic and distant as he sometimes seemed, he was always a kind soul at heart. The notion of passing down the many lessons he'd learned in his warrior days was not only an appealing one, but a humbling one as well. He knew firsthand that ambition was a strong tool, but one must never allow an overdeveloped sense of focus to rob them of what good might lie in the peripheral. He remains proud of all that he had accomplished, but he hopes that his adopted son will learn to savor all aspects of life.
