The_Vast_%22Tarotesque%22.jpg

"The Vast is one of the Entities. Its domain is our fear of our own insignificance in this universe, of losing yourself in too much space, as well as heights, falling and open spaces.

It commonly manifests as void, vertigo, and falling, as well as anything to do with openness and open spaces. It often appears as huge, unfathomable creatures that are too distant and immense for humans to properly comprehend."

lIF7tSw.png "Vertigo, agoraphobia, the dread of deep water, of our own insignificance before the universe."

The Vast's artefacts are the following:

• Ex Altiora: A Leitner written in Latin that tells the story of a town jumping off a cliff in the face of destruction by an unfathomable creature. Smells of ozone and induces vertigo.

• A strange book of astronomy: An unamed book that left the reflection's of "uncanny" constellations within the reader's eyes long after they attempt to use the book to chart the stars. They're described as nearly having been "lost to the cosmos."

The Vast's domains are the following:

The Realm of the Great Beast: it possibly feeds off the terror of inescapable destruction. It is a sprawling expanse of towns which an unimaginably huge creature made of millions of humans rampages through, crushing them underfoot. The inhabitants are divided into two groups- those on the ground who desperately try to get away as their loved ones try to underplay the threat, and those people who are part of the monster.

The Monument: it can also be aligned with The Spiral and The Eye, preying on those who attempt to categorize the world with themselves at the centre. A "cascading recursion of shifting arrogance and hubristic dead-ends" wherein academics are trapped in an ever-changing maze. The inhabitants come up with elaborate theories as to how to escape the domain, only to have the maze shift to prove them wrong.

The Ocean: possible aspects of The Dark and The Lonely. A victim is infinitely drowning in it with an unknown creature swimming around them. When they break the surface they find the ocean goes on forever and allow themselves to drown again.

The Precipice: it presumably feeding on the fears of heights and falling. It takes the form of a massive cliff-face with people traveling along it using a variety of rickety ladders, with thousands of people falling besides them.

The Endless Supermarket: it likely feeds off the fear of a meaningless or empty life, taking the form of an endless supermarket.

In the 1800s, a servant of The Vast devised and attempted an ocean-based Ritual called "The Awful Deep", descending deep underwater with a group of sacrifices in a specially-designed diving bell. The ritual “fizzled“ both because the fear of the deep ocean wasn’t prevalent enough to take advantage of, and a Hunter interrupted it, though the servant admits the whole ritual "wasn’t a very good idea". He figures that he's at least a century away from being able to try again, as he hopes to attempt something with outer space.
