The_Buried_%22Tarotesque%22.jpg

"The Buried is one of the Entities. It's a collection of fears that deal with being trapped without enough space: claustrophobia, small spaces, of being unable to breathe and the underground and dust, of being at the center of everything and it is all pushing down.

Deep water can be associated with The Buried, but only when the effect is described as claustrophobic, crushing, drowning, heavy, sinking, etc. The Buried is also associated with certain "crushing" money issues, such as desperate poverty, "drowning in debt," and seeking or borrowing money under bad terms."

lIF7tSw.png "Small spaces, crushing, you can't breathe."

The Buried's artefacts are the following:

• A coffin that's usually locked and held closed with chains. It's a gateway into The Buried, and screams, moans and scratching of wood can be heard from its victims when it rains or when objects are placed on the lid.

• A Leitner Book apparently filled with pages that read nothing but "DIG." It gives its readers the urge to dig. Could possibly also bestow its readers with the ability to see things of value beneath the earth's surface.

• A box that traps a person inside the morning after they touch it. Each time its prisoner feels any kind of hope of getting out, it gets smaller. Time moves differently inside The Box.

• Seven Lamps of Architecture: A Leitner Book that, when read in full, causes walls to close in around the reader.

The Buried's domains are the following:

The Field of Worms: it possibly feeds off the fear of being trapped without options. It's a large field in which the inhabitants, seemingly those who were desperately poor before the change, are trapped in tight constricting tunnels, with only a faint glimpse of the sky providing light and false hope. They slowly, painfully try to drag their way to the surface, but whenever they get close rain pours down the tunnels, pushing them further back.

The Colony: also aligned with The Corruption, it feeds on the fear of being trapped with a lot of insects. It takes the form of a massive tunnel system made up of an uncountable number of ants. The people trapped there are forced to keep moving forward in the cramped tunnels while the often mutated ants crawl and bite them.

The Prison: also possibly aligned with The Desolation, The Eye, the Spiral and The Lonely. It presumably feeds off of the fear of mistaken arrest and being arrested for something they did not do. Inhabitants alternate between being trapped in a prison cell for prolonged periods of time and experiencing distorted memories of different arrests and abuses. It's implied they are also tormented by the jailers and guards.

The Buried's Ritual is called "Sunken Sky". It took place in a large city, where the townspeople began silently climbing into a massive pit that kept growing every time someone fell into it. An unknown researcher stopped the ritual by tossing the dismembered body of a victim of The Vast, into the pit. An earthquake that struck later that night, as a result of the Ritual's end, destroyed the town.
