Sandu defines himself by his relationships. He is the younger brother to Yanli, the filial son of his dead parents, the proud uncle to his nephews and nieces - and the beloved of a dragon he can't name without blushing. Raised with a clear sense of his place in the world and the worth that place demands, Sandu is never certain that he can live up to other people's standards. He is quite aware that he doesn't live up to his own. Defensively, he refuses to admit either truth, insisting that he is the best in any given situation. Where Yanli is sweet, her brother is snarly. Where his foster brother is assured, Sandu is hesitant to break convention. But he loves just as fiercely and just as well.
