Biography

Alder
Mad Scientist|Crime Boss
Lawful Evil

Alder poses as a researcher, and holds a high position in the clan's society. He's also the resident criminal mastermind, always plotting his next big heist. Eventually, once he's amassed enough treasure, he plans to conquer the Isles, and then all of Sornieth. 'Supreme Overlord Alder' has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you say?

Alder used his charm and quick wit to talk his way into Silas' good books, and the clan leader is blissfully ignorant of Alder's criminal enterprise. Under Silas' misguided protection, Alder runs a vast smuggling ring with his partner Corathan, accruing vast amounts of treasure and gems. While some of the treasure is spent on himself and his mate, the majority of it goes towards financing his various mechanical contraptions, all of which are eventually used in his many failed attempts at major heists.

One such contraption was donated to the clan, and is another reason why Alder has an undeservedly good reputation around the clan. Quite simply, it's a massively oversized cannon. It's far too cumbersome for personal use (even for Reina), which is why he was willing to give it up. Mostly, the cannon is used for fending off the occasional bands of pirates that unwisely attempt to raid the clan, but sometimes a dragon just can't resist the allure of firing it at the landscape. That's an unexpected boon for Alder, since as long as the clan guard is chasing obvious troublemakers there's no chance of them investigating him.

While claiming Clan _______ has a criminal underground may be a bit excessive, it's not as if Alder works alone. Reina is his right-hand dragon, working mainly as an enforcer but also as mundane brute strength when needed. His other collaborators work less directly with him. Corathan's smuggling not only funds a lot of Alder's work, but is the only source of the rare components his inventions need. Of course, whenever those inventions inevitably malfunction it's Corathan who is blamed for providing faulty parts. (Corathan argues that component quality isn't the real issue, but Alder built heaters into his clothes long ago to keep himself safe from the coatl's preferred method of convincing others.) As for Jubei? He and Alder don't particularly work together. They've simply come to an agreement where neither will rat the other out in exchange for mutual protection. Thus they spend all their time exchanging threats and looking for the first opportunity to betray one another.

He considers Gwenith his rival, not because her petty thievery brings in as much treasure as his smuggling ring (it doesn't), but because unlike him, she's actually able to successfully bring back her ill-gotten gains without leaving a trace when she attempts a big job. He thinks they have a lot in common. Two thieves who understand that it's not only about the gold (though the treasure is very nice), but that what really matters is the artistry behind pulling off a particularly audacious heist. Gwenith hasn't acknowledged him once.

Even though he is a capable inventor, the golems he builds are not originally of his own design. They're created from a modified version of some old blueprints he found in the depths of the fortress, edited for his own purposes, often at the expense of reliability. Obviously, this is a secret he lets nobody learn (and live to tell anyone else).

Lately though, he's decided that golems are too much work for not enough payoff. (Or maybe he's just frustrated due to his many failures.) Instead, he's working on augmenting existing animals with the latest technology. After all, weapons tech is so much more fun to design than a golem's body. Attaching laser beams to an amphithere? Pure genius.

Alder sustained a grievous wound in the past, but keeps the lasting effect it's had on his health hidden from everybody. It's slowly killing him, and if he wasn't so unwilling to show weakness it could likely be healed.

Then again, healers are for the weak. If Alder's body is failing him, then clearly it just isn't good enough for the fae. He'll build himself new body parts! Perhaps even an entirely new body! With the power of science in his claws, there's nothing that Alder feels can stop him.

Your Trust is your Strength, even if You do not Believe it so. But here, it is misguided.
