━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ observation log 93-52-74. Subject (henceforth referred to as Illustella) is a new discovery in research of Halogen, a predator that wanders through space and feeds on stars. Despite taking the form of a male Aether, for reasons known only to Halogen, Illustella does not display any personality of its own. Any unique observation of Illustella is referred to as an instance of Illustella. Halogen's newest hunting behaviour was a sudden development, and currently any theories are little more than conjecture. The prevailing theory is that the behaviour developed in response to discovering intelligent life in the sector she currently hunts in, and the behaviour dissuades the intelligent life in that system from taking action. When first arriving in a sector, Halogen seems to not act for a variable length of time - current range is from one week Sornieth time to 6 months Sornieth time. Behaviour displayed during this time can be described as observation and memorisation. After sufficient observation, Halogen will spread her wings wide and her eyes will flare bright yellow. The star-like pattern on her body and wings will dim significantly, with some researchers observing that the pattern seems to lift off her body and start to coalesce in front of her. When the stars have finished coalescing, new instances of Illustella will be created. The number is variable - current hypothesis is that the number of instances corresponds to the number of intelligent civilisations in the sector - and the instances immediately move at a uniform speed to the potential locations of intelligent civilisations. Illustella have their own patterns and markings, being observed as a recreation of the night sky as of Halogen's arrival in the sector. However, these patterns start to "bleed" off the instances at the edges of their bodies, floating upwards from the edges. This is the only way to distinguish an Illustella instance from the real night sky, and the "bleeding" effect can only be observed from behind. This development is extremely concerning. Previously, it was thought that we could detect Halogen's arrival in our sector through observation, though there were disagreements on how quickly we would be able to do so.
