Saujun

Saujun sits atop of the hill. The sky has turned a rich purple from the setting sun. Saujun has this tiny ritual in her daily life, where she watches the sunset every night. It started when she was young, and her parents took her out during the sunset. Ever after that moment, she has a fascination with the sun setting.

As an adult, Saujun has traveled far and wide to see the sun set in a variety of places. The sunset looks different at every place in Sornieth, but it always has something magical about it. As an extra, tangible memory, Saujun has painted the sunset at all the places that she has visited. Her lair is filled with beautiful canvases, all depicting the sunset at a different place in the world. Even now, she has her painting supplies with her. Even if this hill isn’t a big, important destination, it’s still worth it to paint, even here. Saujun has spent almost the entire twilight to finish her latest painting, but luckily it’s done before the sun fully sets, and she can take a moment to just sit down and enjoy the view. Staring directly at the sun isn’t too good for you, but Saujun does it anyway.

As the last sliver of the sun slowly disappears under the horizon, Saujun slowly begins to notice that there are no stars visible at all. There should be stars, sprinkled across the purples and blues of the arriving night sky. But that sky is empty. And, if she looks closely, it’s also surprisingly dark. Saujun glances over at her painting. Which looks normal and contains stars. Did she imagine it? She looks at the sky again, noticing the last it of light of the sun struggling against a pitch black background.

And then, in a hot flash, all that remains is darkness.
