Biography

G R A N I T E
Storyteller

No one could guess how a Nocturne egg ended up in a broken chest in the sands of Dragonhome, or how it remained alive in the harsh landscape, but one thing was clear: the egg would soon die without care.
The small band of scavenging dragons who had discovered the egg bundled it up in a warm cloak and with great care transported it to their lair. The Skydancer that acted as the clan's nursemaid took over the egg's care and incubated it in front of a warm fire, singing to it in a soft voice, hoping and praying that the hatchling would make it. To her surprise and delight the egg moved in a slow shudder, and then cracked. It split upon, revealing a brown hatchling with oversized blue and white wings and deep blue eyes. The Skydancer fell in love with the hatchling and named him Granite, a common name for hatchlings born in Earth. The name was fitting, for he wrestled and played amongst the rocks with other Earth hatchlings despite his element and interest being very different from his peers. Granite was respectful to his elders and had a smile that softened even the hardest of stony hearts, it wasn't difficult for the rest of the clan to accept him as one of their own even though he was very different.
One of the greatest differences between Granite and his peers was his temperament; instead of patient and calm, Granite was a restless adventurer with a very short attention span. The young Nocturne loved his home and his adopted family, but over time his blue eyes began to drift restlessly toward the horizon and he wondered what kinds of places lay far from the Pillar of the World.
When he was an adult he finally left all he knew, presuming he'd return home after he traveled a bit. Granite's strong wings, now proportionate to his body, took him to dizzying heights as he left the rocks and heat of his home.
The first place Granite saw was the Viridian Labyrinth, and it took his breath away. The only bright color he had seen previously was from the odd berry. As he flew past the flowers and hummingbirds and tall trees he realized he had never seen so many colors. His rather sleepy home was very different from this hive of life and beauty!
And just like, Granite fell in love with travel. He explored his Nocturne heritage in the Tangled Wood and deep in the Sea of a Thousand Currents Granite embraced being a Water dragon. He returned to his clan less and less, with several months and then years between each trip home, never settling down.
Eventually he left his home for good and sought out another clan to live in. One of Granite's favorite parts of travel was the sheer number of clans and dragons he saw weekly. He made several friends at every clan he stayed at, but he never stayed long enough to build a strong friendship, except at a single clan in the Starfall Isles.
He originally intended to stay only a couple days, and even less when he discovered he was staying near an especially crabby Snapper. His name was Pixis, and he wanted nothing to do with the energetic young Nocturne. Granite felt the same way until the day he was supposed to leave. As he was heading out, he heard the voice of a storyteller nearby. Granite usually was quickly bored by stories, but this story captivated him, so he put down his things and followed the sound.
To his surprise, the storyteller was Pixis, and he was telling his story to a group of attentive hatchlings. Granite sat among them and asked questions, along with the younger dragons. He and Pixis began talking about Granite's travels and Pixis became fascinated with the traveling life. Granite stayed for another week and told him all the stories he had heard from other storytellers on his travels, with Pixis always thirsting for more stories to retell to others.
Finally Granite invited Pixis to join him on his travels to tell stories to their many hosts and to hear them from other storytellers. They grew to be great friends as they traveled together. They were almost opposites with Granite being cheerful and Pixis being perpetually grumpy but they balanced each other and worked well together. Pixis's stories captivated Granite while Pixis was a lot less grumpy when he was with Granite. Granite found that Pixis made his travels much more interesting. They spurred each other on when they got weary and were always helping each other when things went awry, building and growing, and eventually, feeling something new. Until one drastic day when the tension formed between the two travelers begun to become more serious than it had before, to the point of them choosing to go their separate ways out of fear.
Granite traveled on alone, surprised at how devoid of something his travels suddenly were.
Years later, he passed through Clan Yulon in the Sunbeam Ruins and had a long conversation with Kelsus, the clan leader. He decided to live there for a time, and stayed for several months before resuming his travels.
Before he left to continue traveling, however, he met Pixis again, who had moved to Clan Yulon when he quit traveling.
Granite realized how lonesome his travels were and pleaded for Pixis to make amends and continue traveling with him again. Finally Pixis agreed, and Granite was overjoyed. They got to know each other all over again and Granite found that Pixis had changed a lot, but in a good way. Granite and Pixis traveled together for even longer than they had before.
Eventually, though, the traveling once more came to an end, and Granite felt incredibly weary and ready to settle down. However, a part of Granite still wanted the thrill of a new clan, so he decided to move. Pixis was angry at Granite for the first time in a while and refused to let him go, spending days convincing Granite to stay, much like Granite once convinced him to travel.
When he had successfully convinced Granite, Pixis vouched for Granite to Kelsus, the clan leader, because it was clan law that every permanent resident had to have a useful quality. Pixis told Kelsus about Granite's phenomenal scouting and tracking skills for he knew humble Granite wouldn't give himself and his extraordinary skills the credit he deserved.
Finally she consented to Granite permanently staying, and this time both Pixis and Granite were overjoyed. They scouted together for several years and the clan enjoyed extra safety for nothing escaped Granite's sharp gaze.
After many long years of scouting, Granite and Pixis were both weary once more with age, and they retired together, resigning themselves together. They turned the adventures they had from both tracking and scouting into wonderful stories. Most of the time it was Pixis telling the stories and Granite enjoying them, but Granite soon became an accomplished storyteller himself with action-packed stories appealing to older dragons while Pixis had gentler but still amusing stories for the hatchlings. One day, as Granite watched Pixis entertain a few traveling dragons, he began to realize why exactly he had felt strange all those years ago when the two had traveled together originally, why he was beginning to feel it again. It was as if everything was beginning to make sense, like a puzzle finally being completed. Granite was growing old, as was Pixis. It wasn't time to hide anymore. He approached him shortly afterward.
''Pixis, promise me that you will stay with me until the day we both die." Pixis smiled slightly, unused to Granite being so solemn.
"I promise."
And they never were apart since. Their relationship as mates sealed, the two now live out their retirement together, happy old storytellers, remembering their youth.
