Bootleg is a very good private detective who pretends to be a very bad sailor. It's easiest, after all, when people underestimate you! And it's easy to underestimate someone who claims to be a sailor but doesn't know a half-hitch from a jibe! This works better the further inland he is. He can just pretend to be extremely lost, and most nice dragons are too busy helping him to notice him snooping around. The not-so-nice dragons, well - people with something to hide are his favourite kind.
