BLURB
"...Squad Leader Rhamnous, once again I implore you, we must tighten up the Task Forces' entry requirements. Right now, we count among our members petty crooks who have burgled all over Zenith's Light, street fighters whose only concern is getting rich, and even a bandit whose band of cronies almost succeeded in robbing a bank! If I hadn't personally caught him red-handed - scoping the place out for anomalous items under the guise of being an investor - they might very well have pulled it off... For the gods' sake, we're supposed to be elite squadrons of highly trained personnel! Even if just to preserve our image, please consider doing something!"

~ The ninth in a series of pleading letters sent to Rhamnous by the Research Labs Task Forces Director Tabit.

ABOUT

Born to a cold-blooded killer of a mother and a Shade-touched killer of a father, and sibling to an equally murderous sister and brother, [REDACTED] did not love his childhood. He grew up amongst constant squabbles between his parents, often ending in duels. He had never experienced true affection, and so he and his siblings did not display normal sibling behavior, instead engaging in challenges that could end in near-fatal injury. He was not surprised when he learned the reason he had so few siblings; almost all of them had been sacrificed in a blood pact between his parents. He decided he did not like being surrounded by a Clan of murderers, and escaped and changed his name to Rhamnous.

Being a Shade-touched dragon in a Light clan dedicated to eradicated the Shade is... difficult, to say the least. Nobody knows why he willingly stays around regardless (a way of enacting his revenge? Has he become a hunter of his own kind? Is he a willing guinea pig volunteer for Project Daybreak? Does he wish to no longer be Shade-touched?), but he's carved out his own abode in one of the more remote areas of the main Clan to avoid too much social interaction. Regardless, he values pragmatism over any notions of "honour", and constantly trains how to use the Shade - this arguably makes him one of the Labs' biggest assets in combatting it. He is good at finding and containing Shade-cursed objects; he was made the leader of Task Force Zeta-5 "Acheron" with this in mind.

His necklace serves to contain the excess Shade so it doesn't affect the few dragons he does interact with. Still, the excess Shade takes the form of a raven, though it's still connected to the necklace (it likes sitting on his horns; he's long since given up on shooing it away).

"What do you want," Rhamnous grinds out, as the opaline rifts across his body pulse slightly with Shade energy. The deep purple teacup before him sits untouched. The white and gold one, however, is picked up by the tiny flaxen Skydancer sitting daintily on the armchair across the table, who blows gently on its surface. Against all logic, she looks rather unperturbed by the fact that she's being confronted by a hulking Imperial at least nine times her size. In fact, her eyes seem to glitter with slight amusement, but there's the faintest hint of a steely edge to them. Rhamnous, however, pays it no mind; he has no time for frivolous games.

(If Rhamnous were wiser or even slightly attuned to elemental magic, he would have been alerted to the fact that the Skydancer's magical aura is so ridiculously powerful that she actually glows rather brightly. Alas, he is not, and so the fact is simply glossed over as "anti-Shade defenses".)

"Very well, don't get too hasty," the Skydancer takes a sip of her tea. For a second, Rhamnous thinks about shooting a Shade bolt at the baby Aberration sleeping by her tail to get her to drop whatever act she's putting up, but his more rational side reasons that it's an incredibly stupid thing to do. "Simply put, it is mostly curiosity about why you've stayed around despite you being Shade-touched being public knowledge in a Clan whose goal it is to eradicate the Shade."

"I have my own reasons." Important dragon or no, he isn't about to go spilling his life story to some random stranger. "Mostly curiosity?"

She merely hums in response. "The other part was to offer you a deal. We give you housing and access to the Clan's supply of food, and in exchange, you help us find and contain Shade-cursed objects - according to my sources, it should not be too difficult for someone of your caliber. In addition, no harming other Clan members, which should be fairly obvious, and no exposing others to the Shade more than they have to. Wear protective talismans over yourself if you have to."

Rhamnous hesitates. That sounds awfully convenient. Clearly, they want to keep him around for some undiscernable purpose, but... "What's the catch?"

"If you wish to refuse, you can leave, but will not be allowed to enter our borders again or you will be hunted down and killed."

"And if I decide to enter anyway?"

The Skydancer simply gives him a serene smile. For the first time in his discussions with the Skydancer, this, of all things, gives him pause. Something about the infuriating calmness she's displaying, her implicit admission that his life matters as much to her as an ant's... it put him a little ill at ease.

Or maybe it's the little brilliant flaxen embers which dance at the edge of her claws as she sets the teacup back on its saucer, singeing the edge of the table ever so slightly. He's surprised to recognise the sharp taste of Light magic on his tongue. Light magic in its purest form, and a hint of something else, something other that he could not possibly deign to fathom.

He's witnessed a sizable number of powerful dragons in their prime at the peak of their capacities, not least of which is (unfortunately) his father. What he feels now is indeed of that level, if not even greater. But rather than the sheer amount of power brought to the table, it's the feel of it which gave him pause.

The echo of something divine, something far greater than himself - maybe even greater than the Shade coursing through his body. It's hard to describe precisely how he senses it, as his brain struggles to reconcile the fact that the Skydancer in front of him is clearly exceptionally strong, but still within the bounds of that category, with that feeling that something incomprehensibly strong is gazing at him through the body sitting in front of him. Divine, incomprehensibly strong, and deeply malicious at the moment.

But before he can react in time to the sudden sense of impending danger, it suddenly vanishes. With a quick wave of her claw, the Skydancer dissipates the embers and continues giving him that damned smile.

"In that case, do ask my son about what became of the last dragon who attempted to weaponise the Shade against me."

Rhamnous swallows his dread. It's said in a light enough tone, but... he's sharp enough to infer the most obvious answer. "...got it. Fine, I'll accept your deal."

In response, the Skydancer simply chuckles. "Welcome to Zenith's Light."
