Biography
_________‒‒‒‒‒‒‒ Hlín Halfling ; The Scout Commander
A dragon without a past, Hlín arrived as a stranger and stayed as a friend. Not that anyone had seen her arrive, no wingbeats in the night nor shuffling steps in the squeaky snow, but one morning she was there and Valhall was not the kind of place where dragons ignored those in need. It is that kindness and love Hlín strives to repay, to embody; to become. Hlín is the kind of dedicated that bleeds into obsessive, reaching too far to ensure those around her goes safe. Her presence and work is priceless. Where other dragons may pride themselves on their hard work and sturdy character, Hlín prides herself solely on results, and she perpetually balances on the edge of taking things too far. Some call her a workaholic, whisper of unhealthy coping and harming oneself, whilst Hlín prefer to see it all as effort. Investments. Necessities. ________ » Has specialized in techniques meant for the Ghostlight Ruins and is now one of the sole dragons that venture into that part of the wilderness. » Struggles with flashbacks and panic attacks from an event she has yet to share with the other dragons of Valhall. It has, however, gotten better over the years. |
______THE BROKEN MIND
She was awkward at the best of times, fumbling her way through first impressions and casual chatter alike, and rarely ended up charming those around her. If she wasn't too aggressive about it, she'd be too reserved, and if not that she'd manage to say something so incomprehensibly stupid it would, without fail, derail the entire conversation.
But there were petty problems, shallow in the grand scheme of things.
Hlín was not old when her birth clan was razed to the ground and wiped from the maps entirely. Everything she'd ever known, everyone she'd ever known, slaughtered and burned to ashes. She was lucky to get away, some told her after, but Hlín was not one to agree.
Some days, she wished she would have died with them.
Most days, she knows it's her mind refusing to cooperate with her, and those days she fights it with a vigour born solely from spite. Hlín survived weeks on her own as a young, traumatized dragon in the wilderness without a speck of training— she would not let her own mind be the end of her.
It became easier after she found Valhall, too, and allowed herself to open up to others once more. For there is a good dragon beneath the clipped words and awkward avoidance of eye-contact.
A loyal, steadfast dragon that is the kind of friend one has for life. The sort of leader that will always walk with the troops rather than ahead of them, and the kind of clanmate that would do anything to keep their fellow Valhallans comfortable. Hlín has seen ruin, and it scarred her, and she would do anything to keep those she cares about from ever knowing what it was like. It is obsessive, at times, for Hlín will not back down when something happens, and she would gladly fight the gods themselves if necessary.
She would do too much. For she's the one that runs herself into the ground, gives everything without ever asking for something in return, because anything she does is either done fully or not at all.
And it is as much of a blessing as it is a curse.
She was in bad shape and on the brink of death, the healers doing what they could but expecting her to pass during the night regardless. Yet when dawn came, Hlín breathed still and her heart beat steadily. She slept for days, struggling to recover from whatever she'd been through.
With fresh scars to show for her hardships, Hlín healed. She spent months bedridden and silent, catatonic. The healers did what they could to aid her, but she remained silent. Even as she slowly came to, showing more and more awareness and clearly comprehending what was happening, she did not speak nor acknowledge anyone else. Up until, one day, a dragon visiting the healers by chance stopped by her bed. The dragon, called Verandi, had smiled at her softly and offered her a few, quiet words. No one quite knows what she said, but Hlín had looked truly surprised. Whatever was said, it had a clear effect on the silent Nocturne.
Afterwards, Hlín opened up. It was not a quick process by any means, but she started speaking. Got to know a few of the healers, then got to know a few other dragons once she was healthy enough to get her own lodgings. There was no real questions to whether or not she wanted to stay; Hlín knew it, everyone else knew it. And so she stayed, carefully exploring the lair and her new home. As time went on, Hlín found her place among all the chaos that was Valhall. She joined the Scouts, made friends and, in the end, took over as leader of the scouts. And she was happy, there, with a job she loved and friends she treasured and a future as bright as the sun above. No matter what had once happened, Hlín knew it was a thing of the past and, despite some days being bleak still, she was ready to move on once and for all.
