Runes & Their Meanings

It's said that runes are indecipherable for a reason. That if we were to read them, to speak what they said aloud, the consequences would be cataclysmic. A little known fact, however, is that every dragon with runes knows how to read theirs and theirs alone. They can choose — once, for this is an unpredictable and mighty power — to speak words and phrases the runes have inscribed across their scales. This choice is not to be treated lightly, and the results will change the dragon forever.

For the runes upon a dragon are not random. Fate, destiny, kismet, providence - some force bigger than any of us decides what runes a dragon will bear, and once invoked, the power that lay dormant awakens. It can manifest in many ways — perhaps a hobby becomes a passion, or a knack for something becomes a talent. Perhaps an introverted, quiet dragon retreats from the world to become a hermit, or an effusive, charismatic dragon becomes an overnight sensation.

However, the changes are not always benign. Once the power of the runes is unleashed, it needs to be directed somewhere. There have been reports of dragons gaining extrasensory abilities — shy dragons turning invisible, scholarly dragons developing perfect recall, volatile dragons becoming beacons of incandescent flame when they lose their temper.

Invocation is an unstable process. There are horror stories of dragons who went crazy, of those who were unable to deal with their newfound power and fled civilization entirely, of those who one day simply vanished — and no one could really remember their name. The outcomes are both beautiful and terrible, and awakening one's runes is a hefty gamble.

Not all dragons choose to invoke their runes, of course. Even unspoken, however, the runes retain their power. Dragons who choose not to invoke their runes occasionally have side effects — chronic fatigue, a short temper, and an inability to concentrate. The potency of the runes cannot be denied, and it must manifest somewhere, somehow. Where and how? That's up to the dragon — and the runes.

The parents, Losna and Walkersea, have a special ability with a form of telekinesis, where they can take themselves and others to float on the winds. They do not have to flap their wings but remain perfectly stable and floating in midair without moving a muscle. The lair calls upon them during ceremonies and when the healers must move the injured. They can stay aloft for hours at a time, but during full moon phases they are at their strongest. They mentally reach to each other through that inner heart where they feel each other always, and combine their strength. During these times, the entire lair can float with them if they wish. It is a truly relaxing and mystical experience to participate. They believe that it is a mating link connected to their runes.

Locally, they are known as the Moonsingers - loving to float above the lair and sing songs into the night on special occasions. Until recent contact with new friends from the Ruins in Light Flight lands, they were unaware there were others similar to them. They are only now learning about invoking their Runes.

They feel power in their children, though they have yet to determine their exact nature.
