Plague Aura

Native of the Everbloom Gardens, Alata grew to become greatly unsatisfied with the way of life of the local Gaolers. Her clan's corner of the Viridian Labyrinth was peaceful, tranquil, not a trace of the Shade to be seen in decades, nay, centuries. Yes, vigilance was important. Yes, a continued presence of Gaolers may prevent the Shade from returning to the land. But her clan was just... complacent. They grew lazy and uninterested in their kind's fight, barely even bothering to mark themselves as members of any order.

Alata found herself shunning her family. What were they Gaolers for, if they didn't follow the path the Icewarden had set for them? Why did they linger in the sun, between flowers and butterflies, when they had been made to withstand the most inhospitable corners of the Southern Icefield? She dreamt of becoming something more. Find her ancestral prisons, where she could fulfill her work as member of the Keepers.

With time, she began to wonder if being a Plague dragon wouldn't have been preferable to Nature. All her life, she grew with whispers of the dangers of the Scarred Wasteland, of how much safer, healthier the Viridian Labyrinth was. Nature and Plague had always been placed one against the other. If Nature was unsatisfying, she reasoned, Plague would satisfy her.

Alata forsook her birth clan for the Scarred Wasteland. The Necromancer trials, once she learnt about them, were too alluring to resist. They would give her strength, and power. Alata may not be the most devout to the Plaguebringer, but she could attempt nonetheless. She climbed the Rotrock Rim without fears - and with a certain dose of arrogance.

The sickness was unlike anything she had ever experienced. It attacked her quickly, and rendered her shaking and delirious with fever. Memories of the wretched ghouls Alata had seen chased away from the Rim was perhaps the only thing that gave her the strength to withstand the plague, determination to at least not become one of them. She fought the infection with all her strength. By the time she succeeded, it was too late. The signs the Plaguebringer left on her body weren't a mark of pride for a victory, but a symbol of someone who had barely been able to survive. A Wraith, powerless, undesirable.

Alata couldn't stand remaining in the Scarred Wasteland. She felt the judgement of those who had passed the trials, the Necromancers and Necroservus looking down on her. Whispers that she had never been devoted enough. Knowing that if she wished to be someone, she could only do so by working for a Necromancer. At the same time, Alata couldn't return to her birth clan, not with this shame.

The Starfall Isles were easy to reach, and far from anyone who would know her. Once she had put some distance between her and the border with the Plague realm, almost no one could tell she was a Wraith. For some time she wandered, not knowing where to go. How she wished to find a way to still be useful - but she couldn't stand the potential judgement of others, once they discovered her failure.

Alata bounced from one clan to the other, never staying long. When aiming for a small clan in the Crystalspine Reaches, she didn't think anyone would take much notice of her. It so happened one of the local Gaolers, Allsee, had once been a well respected dragon in the Scarred Wasteland, and recognized the signs of the Necromancer Trials when she saw them. Allsee didn't care much if Alata had failed at becoming a Necromancer. After all, Allsee herself was here, and had clearly never even attempted, so why would she pass judgement?

Some of the other clan members shook their heads when they heard of Alata's past. This was an Arcane clan, with prominent healers to boost, none of them held Necromancers in particularly high regard. But Allsee was happy to offer shelter to Alata. A fellow devotee was welcome company. And a determined Gaoler was always a good addition to a clan - one never knew when a Wraith's enduring constitution could come in handy.
