Written night of 4-21-24
The Gaoler lifted her head and shook her mane, feeling her dense fur settle around her shoulders a moment later as she looked to the sky. The denizens flew above her, carrying on about their business, and if she squinted, she could make out clansmembers that she knew by heart and name, but she didn’t feel like squinting today. Inhaling deep, she sensed a different scent on the winds and felt a stirring inside. Unable to put her claw on it though, she lowered her head and swept her gaze about the lair. “Can you smell it?” somebody called out behind her, and she turned to see one of her sisters approaching. Curious, the green dragon cocked her head to the side and studied her sister as the other Gaoler inhaled just as she had. “That scent. It’s the Winds of Change, sister. It’s always a tangy tartly tickle of the nose, a bittersweet aroma in the nostrils,” she went on to say as she took another deep breath. “And they’ve come .. for us,” she added enigmatically as her Fire orange eyes settled on the deeper colored dragon.
(name) nodded her head, seeing as how her sister was right, and agreed, though thought to herself again how the way she sounded might’ve come across as weird to outside ears. “You always did have a way of knowing,” she said, confirming her sister’s suspicions as they both inhaled the spiced scent. Her sister smiled, her confidence growing at the compliment. “What do you think the change will be?” she asked then, turning her eyes to the sky as she watched the others fly overhead. (name) regarded her sister, unsure how to tell her how the air was making her feel, but figured there was no better time to say so than that very present moment.
“I believe they’re for me,” she finally decided to settle on saying. “It feels as though something is stirring inside, compelling me to go where they call and pull me,” she explained as softly as she could, knowing how her sister would take it. Her suspicions were correct as her face fell after focusing back on the green Gaoler. “You don’t mean..? “ she trailed off, unwilling to voice her fears. But (name) nodded, giving confirmation to the younger one’s questioning eyes and searching gaze. “It is time to leave, dear one. They’re calling me, pushing my blaze in a different direction than cannot be fulfilled here,” she continued, just as gently. (name of sister) stared at her, her mouth slightly agape as all thoughts ceased. “B-but that would mean..” she stammered, still not willing herself to say it. “You will manage without me, I’m sure,” (name) said to reassure her. “You always were the stronger one out of us. Mother and Father would be proud of you for keeping yourself together while I would leave to fulfill my destiny instead of staying here and remaining stagnant. You were strong while I was wise, remember?” she added, with a smile while trying to console her sister. Though tears began to pool in the other Gaoler’s eyes, she closed her mouth, seeming to have run out of words and leaned forward, plowing into (name)’s fluffy mane, letting her fur soak up her tears. “I’ll be strong for you,” she said into the fluff, though how much her sister heard of it she wasn’t sure.
(name) smiled for she had heard it and patted her sister’s back. The winds blew again, and more than ever, the Gaoler felt the pull, almost as if the breeze was calling out her name, beckoning her to join them. She flapped her vestigial wings at her side, knowing she couldn’t join join them, but the thought remained, and she spread what flap of skin that she could between her membranous phalanges and felt the winds rush through her fur and over the skin, and imagined what it must have been like to fly. Wrapping an arm around her still leaking sister, she looked to her and said three simple words to wrap things up. “I must go. They call me. Surely you understand?” (name of sister) looked up to her through her now bleary eyes, but nodded, and she brought a paw up to her face and wiped her wetted cheeks dry. (name) mirrored the motion, bringing a paw of her own to her sister’s face and wiped away what tears she could as well and smiled to the littler one. “Be joyful, not mourning. Be joyful for the opportunities and adventures the change will bring that await me,” she said, looking deep into her fiery eyes. (name of sister) snorted at that however, and rolled her eyes. “You sound like a Wind dragon,” she retorted and chuckled. (name) smiled, realizing how that could sound like something one of their brethren of the Windswept Plateau would say and chuckled at that, too. Having nothing more to say however, she wrapped her up in another hug, and held her sister before breaking apart as another gust blew by. And thus, she left the clan and began her journey into the realm, following the Winds of Change that lead her to her new home..
Along the way as she traveled, there was news of another Ancient discovered that spread through the realm like wildfire, and (name)’s mind raced at the thought. Another Ancient? Like me and my kin? She wondered as she went, feeling the winds still guiding and pulling her as she plodded on. Hope rose in her then, and she kept her eyes peeled for anything that looked notably out-of-place among the Modern breeds, but nothing caught her eye at first… until a pair of rocks rolled to a stop beneath her feet and came in the midst of her path to where she nearly tripped on them. At first glance, they appeared to just be ordinary rocks, but upon closer inspection, (name) realized they were no ordinary rocks. Though seeming to have a tough exterior, she picked one up and realized it was warm to the touch .. and fleshy.. Albeit a thick fleshy feel, but there was no mistaking it felt like hide nonetheless. The Gaoler raised her eyebrows at this and wondered what she had stumbled upon, but feeling the sphere in her hands, something struck her that this was no ordinary rock and neither was the other one, and she felt something innate spring to life inside of her, like a primal urge to protect these rounded things as she realized these were no mere rocks.. But eggs!
Carefully stashing them away within the bag of belongings she carried with her, she felt a deep desire to defend them from any harm and to be as gentle as she could with the eggs rising within her. She had never seen any eggs like these before and wondered what they could be, and if this was possibly what the realm was abuzz about with the new Ancients that were released to the lands, and an expectant hope grew in her as well at the thought of that. I found these. They are mine. I will take care of them, no matter what they look like or species they are. She thought fervently to herself as she continued walking at a gentler pace. I will be their caretaker.
A building began to approach on the horizon then, and the winds abated at that, no longer pushing her on so hard. It was as though the winds had died down at that, and she looked around, wondering if this was the place they were guiding her to. Getting her bearings, she saw bamboo shoots everywhere on the exterior lands of the building sprinkled with regular trees, and the second she stepped foot onto the property as she drew yet closer still, the stirring inside of her settled and she finally felt at peace. So this is it, then. The place I’m meant to be, she thought and looked around to see the place she was meant to be was in the realm of the Windsinger, right in the Windswept Plateau atop the Zephyr Heights. She shook her head in amusement at that as she approached the building thinking to herself The “Winds” of Change, indeed. Movement to her side drew her eye to a pair of dragons who had seemed to appear from nowhere and one shouted to her in guttural tones before finally switching to the universally understood Draconic spoken by most of the denizens of Sornieth. “Who goes there?!” the voice called, seeming to come from a brightly colored Mirror who donned a menacing looking ensemble. Finding her voice, (name) spoke, stating how she felt as though she was being called to this place and was looking for refuge and had been urged on by the fabled Winds of Change to find just the place to do so. The Mirror eyed her for a good long minute, then turned to her side and called for another and a Gaurdian lumbered over a moment later. They discussed what (name) had spoken at that, and then they decided to let her into the building as a door appeared in the side of the vast wooden structure and they admitted her into the constructed creation a moment later, welcoming her to what they called the SkyWings clan. A moment later she was brought before a yellow Skydancer and a few others who she learned were the clan leaders and founders, and after she explained herself, thus it was decided she would become a member and had earned a place to stay within the clan, so long as she could prove herself useful in what they called a Role. She agreed, hoping she could find such a thing and could show how she could contribute to the betterment of the whole clan, and was led to a place to stay that had been carved out just for her to make into her own little home.
(name) was astounded by the hospitality and welcoming atmosphere of the dragons of the SkyWings clan, and set to work right away setting up a home for herself .. and her eggs.. She was informed there may be some who would come to help her situate, and she was glad for that, as adjusting could prove to be interesting to say the least.. and it was one day that a dragon named Meriona arrived to help her that her secret got out. (name) had situated a very special spot for the two spheres, replete with the best blankets and soft things the clansmembers had offered her upon her arrival, making the best nest she could try to come up with to the best of her abilities, given how she had never been a mother before, and had nestled the eggs together in the very center so they would be able to incubate nicely out of harm’s way. The Nocturne spied it however, and coming across it, she muttered to herself “what have we here?” as she realized with a start that the Gaoler had brought some unreported passengers with her. She was smart however, and realized the eggs didn’t look like any known breed, and knew that there were no nesting pairs at that time so the Gaoler couldn’t have stolen them from anyone in the clan, though it still raised questions in the Nocturne’s mind. (name) overheard her mutter to herself however, and wandered over to see her gazing down into her makeshift nest. In case the Nocturne had been addressing her, she spoke up at that, explaining how she’d found them on her journey and felt a strong desire to protect them and keep them from harm. The Nocturne regarded her seriously, realizing she was talking about maternal instinct, and smiled, recalling how she had had a similar feeling with several young of the clan that had come to call her ‘mother’ and when she had finally had young of her own a time later. Me-rie told her was what going on and how she could tell based on her experience, and permitted her to keep the eggs and let her be their sole caretaker as she so vehemently wanted to be, but offered her services for help to the Gaoler as well, should it be needed. (name) appreciated that and thanked her, and said it may be needed, especially if the eggs did prove to be an entirely new breed, as she wouldn’t know what she would be in for when it came to raising them. Me-rie smiled and assured her how she would be by her side every step of the way if that’s what it took, and (name) was again grateful at the kindness of the SkyWings clan dragons.
As if on cue, and as though the eggs knew they were talking about them, one of them shook violently and tremored in the nest of blankets, sending the other one into a tailspin of movement as well. Both of their eyes locked on the spot as they watched in awe as the rock-looking eggs began to rock back and forth and spasm uncontrollably at times, as if being controlled by an unseen force. The room enveloped in silence as the two dragons stared at the display before them while the spheres continued to tremble, and for a moment, (name) worried they would roll right out of the blankets by how much they were rocking around. A crack appeared in the thick hide of the shell of one of them then, but not a crack of something that splintered like glass but rather a crack where it looked like it should have been, as though it was a predetermined perforated line that appeared in the surface of the armored shell. More shaking took place as the crack spread, widening to reveal a form inside and the tough fleshy exterior pulled apart with a sickening squelch as liquid tendrils now spread across the gap. The crack spread all the way across the whole exterior of the shell then, and a green-colored mass lay in the middle, with a hide that looked as thick as the egg had been before, unraveling itself and looking up to them, taking its first breaths through the amniotic fluids that ran down their sides and pooled underneath them in what concave bottom was left of the shell. The creature squeaked as it tested out its vocal chords and Me-rie and (name) shared a look at each other. “Well, I suppose it’s official,” Me-rie said as she looked back down to the tiny squirming being that was testing out its limbs next, “you’re now a mother of the newest breed to the land of the clan.” (name) smiled at that, and reached down to the odd-looking green-colored creature that squirmed about and noted how their green hide matched hers and smiled at that as well. “Hello, little one,” she cooed to the small being as she brushed a knuckle past their cheek. “Yes, I’m here. You’re home. I’m your mother. No matter what anyone says, I am your mother. You are mine and I am yours,” she said softly as the little lizard-looking hatchling focused on her with their Plague-red eyes.

Another popping sound drew their attention to the second egg, and they turned to see a crack had formed and the outer exterior was splitting apart in a similar manner as the first one had done. Threads of fluid spread across the widening gap as the egg pulled back to reveal the second figure within, and (name) smiled again, happy to see another life brought into the world, a life that she would be responsible for, just as she would be for the first. As the fleshy egg receded, they saw the hatchling within was a bright pink color with darker wings and opened their eyes to reveal the peridot green of the Windsinger’s sight. Me-rie gasped at that and muttered once again to herself, proud that (name) had been blessed with the fortune of having a Wind child. “Well, would you look at that,” she said softly as the pink green-eyed creature looked up to them, squeaking as they also learned how to use their vocal chords. (name) smiled at that as well, and also rubbed a knuckle past their cheek, feeling her eyes brimming with tears of happiness at the sight of her two new “children”. The green one still carried on squirming, not caring a lick for the arrival of the other, and tested out the strength of their limbs on the blankets, though flailing and flopping miserably at the unencumbered feel of their untrained muscles. (name) smiled at that, and Me-rie smiled too, feeling as though she had overstayed her welcome, and decided to give the new family some time to get to know each other and said she’d let them be. (name) smiled and excused her, appreciative of all of her help up to that point and assured her she may need her yet as they both knew this was an auspicious occasion to witness the birth of an entirely new species. The Gaoler then scooped up the small hatchlings into her hands next, amazed at their size and how she could fit each in the palms of her hands, and felt her heart brimming with love as they squirmed slightly within her gentle grasp. “Welcome home, my little ones. My little loves. You are home. We are home. And we are family. No matter what anyone says. We are family. You are mine, and I am yours,” she said, speaking to them, feeling that still ever-present overwhelming sense of protection for them.. And a feeling of love that blossomed within her for them as well……..
