Least Concern The Black Ghost Knifefish inhabits the freshwater habitats of tropical waters in South America, including the Amazon basin. This nocturnal fish got its scientific name for its all-black color except for a white blaze on the nose and two white rings on the tail. The fish has no scales, and grows to attain a maximum length of about 50 cm. It also possesses an electric organ, with electro-receptors distributed all over its body. Thus, it is among the few animals that can both produce and sense electricity. The fish uses these capabilities to locate insect larvae, its primary food. It also generates electricity to communicate with other members of the species, and for electro-location.

Fun Fact: The Black Ghost Knifefish got its common name from the belief among local indigenous people that the ghosts of the departed can take up residence in these fish.
