❀ Species Profile ❀

Extinct Cryptoclidus was genus of Jurassic plesiosaurs whose specimens have been found in England, Northern France, Russia, and Cuba. These were medium-sized plesiosaurs, with the largest individuals measuring up to 13 ft long. The fragile build of the head and teeth would not have allowed much grappling with prey, and suggest a diet of small, soft-bodied animals such as squid and shoaling fish. Cryptoclidus may have used its long, intermeshing teeth to strain small prey from the water, or perhaps sift through sediment for buried animals. While plesiosaurs are generally thought of as being aquatic, Cryptoclidus may not have been a completely marine creature, but may have spent a great deal of time on land, only going in the water to feed. It is impossible for us to say how Cryptoclidus divided its time between the water and land, although land movement would have been possible. (Even so, it seems that it would have been a much more graceful creature while in the water).

Fun Fact: Size and shape of the nasal openings has led to speculation that these animals were well adapted to detecting odors and chemical traces in the water. This ability would have allowed Cryptoclidus to quickly locate prey that were not immediately visible.
❀ Biography ❀

Crypta came to live in the coastal waters of Owl Wood in January, 2024. Her colors are identical to those of the Tidelord, giving her a very strong connection to her Water origins, but she has easily made friends with the marine and coastal dragons in our clan.
