"Work for the Plaguemother is never done."
✄ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Edith’s Gift I would call her by her name but let’s be honest here. This IS her biography after all and that name isn’t real. Her given name was Edith and her background consisted of very powerful mages with strict upbringings. Their hatchlings were taught at a very young age that the world wasn’t a kind place and many a morning were spent with meditations and prayers to the Plaguemother in brutal conditions. The young ones were taught that food was scarce and kindness was even scarcer and so made sure they were never used to both. Edith went through moments of fear that she’d be like her brothers and sisters, the ones that didn’t make it through their trials. It wasn’t long that she seemed she was going to join them before her talent shined through. She could speak to the dead and convey messages using her small body. Her parents were delighted to say the least. Learning this they pushed her to speak with anything that could be on the other side. And she did. The dead weren’t the only things that could speak after all. Some were benevolent and others not so much. It wasn’t unheard of for her to get injured during these experiments. The last straw was when she was 12, and was forced to try and commune with the Plaguemother herself. The Birth of a Witch Edith now had amassed much power what with her constant training. Her parents decided it was time to test it and see if she could truly commune with their most holy. There were whispers that this test could in fact kill her and Edith being a true survivor of Plague decided this was not going to be her fate. To be a lap dog forever on the edge of life and death just to entertain some old people and their curiosity. So with a well planned knife to the belly and a hijack of a merchant’s cart she was off. Never to see her family again. Traveling in the Plaguelands was nothing if not inviting and during the days she didn’t have company nor food she prayed to the Plaguemother. During these lonesome days she stumbled upon a band of thieves. They were a ragtag group that consisted of 7 dragons all hailing from different flights. When they noticed her it was the seeming second in command that took interest in the fact she didn’t have a thing of value on her. They asked her questions and before long they were exchanging stories. The second in command turned out to be a Spiral hailing from the Earth flight. He was nothing if not charming and Edith had no idea what people outside were like so she was utterly enthralled with him. She made her mark in the group with her abilities and they dubbed her Morrigan after finding out she didn’t care much for her name. She spent a lot of time with them, learning even more magic such as hexes and Plague magic that crippled foes. She was useful to them and for her service they gave her a taste of freedom. This laid back life wouldn’t last long however. A job went bad as the Spiral didn’t take into account of how well these mercenaries were skilled. The night was stained in blood and all Edith could do was slip away unseen, cursing herself for her fear of them. Was she really a survivor? Or a coward? All she knew was that she never ever wanted to die. The idea of her own mortality scaring her. Cheap Parlor Tricks By now Morrigan was 17 and on her own again. She traveled often enough just to keep her mind off things, stifling any feelings she could and diving head first into knowing the real science and magic behind her work. For money she offered to do seances for curious dragons and scaring the wits out of them when they found out she was the real deal. She used most of her funds on her research. It wasn’t long till Granny caught word of the witch for who could ignore somebody of that ability. It took a while to find her but when Granny did, Morrigan was alarmed somebody had actually seeked her out. The exchange went well if not a little scary as both Skydancers sized each other up. In the end they came to respect each other, understanding that Granny was offering her peace and for once in her life: certainty. Morrigan decided to work for her, adding seances to the caravan’s many attractions. The job was fruitful and gave way to new opportunities such as meeting another dragon from Plague that had the same grotesque interests as her. His name was Sanguine and for a good while they were competitive with each other and nothing more. However the more they spoke to each other the more they were captivated with each other’s knowledge of their… field work. Despite Morrigan’s feelings on the matter she fell for him and the two became inseparable even if she was nothing but sarcastic and a bit grim. She’s finally content with her life and continues to work on her experiments, doing it all for the Plaguemother. Is such dedication in reverence to Plague’s deity? Or is it some sort of self imposed penance for running away all those years ago? I guess you’ll just have to muster up the guts and ask. |
