"Quote"

T hey come every thirteen years, with the screeching of cicadas announcing their arrival. Just as the insects crawl out from their nests under the ground, they wake in the forest- and come flying out from within the swarm.

This is the story of the Barghest, Petrichor.

The valley holds some of the darkest secrets, this is no surprise. When you are surrounded by mountains on all sides, with only a gap in the rocky ring to allow entry and exit, a culture unique to the area is built upon the many years of generations born there. Warnings to avoid the many falling rocks during the winter, and paths marked to the fresh springs that pool during the spring. Even though the valley is split into four towns, each with its own community, they still call each other neighbors and kin. Each specializes in one form of trade with the other, and they keep themselves well-fed and cared for.

The northeastern town is called Springwry, and with it being located next to the largest section of the forest with enough barrier between its center- it is well known for its lumber, and medicine. Paper, natural remedies, and all sorts of things come from the town- however, they are tucked into a hole within the valley, so to speak, and struggle when it comes to caring for livestock. Always listen to a Springwry native, when they tell you to avoid the trees if you hear something moving through the bush- they lose naive dragons who don't keep track of the days most often...

The southeastern town is called Shellcoy, and mirroring their nearest neighbor, they have access to large caves full of hidden ponds and rivers of fresh water that has been filtered through the rocks of the mountains. Not only do they provide this fresh water to the other towns when it is necessary, but they also provide a variety of fish and other aquatic creatures. They don't breed these animals, instead letting nature control the pattern and population. It is lucky, then, that main of the natives of Shellcoy like the damp darkness the caves provide. It's from here that most of the food is shared within the four towns during the 13th year, though many dragons will just hide in these caverns for most of the year instead of fishing. It doesn't save them.

The southwestern town is called Pokesly, and while they too have the expansive caves that Shellcoy has- theirs are filled with precious minerals and gems that sparkle under the sun. These precious minerals work well alongside the timber that Springwry provides to the towns, but the gems also bring in trade caravans that pay good gold for some of the hidden things pulled from inside of the mountain. It is a shame that the caravans have to travel so far down into the valley, though, and Pokesly will cease mining when the time comes to hopefully keep those trade caravans from venturing into the danger that they are ignorant of. No amount of jewels and gems will protect them from the swarm, though.

The northwestern town is called Faunthin, and they are lucky to have the most open ground to till and perfect their crops within. Not only crops either, but livestock as well is raised within the town- and thankfully the openness that Faunthin was blessed with allows for both to thrive effortlessly. Not all dragons eat fish after all, nor do all dragons eat plants- so some meat must be provided to the other towns. Faunthin natives know the cost, however, and always know when the year is coming first- not due to their calendars, but by the disturbed ground within their fields from where the swarm is starting to rise. Even with all the meat for the taking, their livestock is never targeted by the swarm- only they themselves are.
