Brightfeather turned from the gash her blade opened on the Emperor's leg, for a brief moment wondering "Why?". It roared so loud her ears bled; she did not flinch, or recoil, her paws grasping firmly the blade on her hand, ignoring the want to cover herself, protect her eardrums from the piercing screech of the monster. She gazed around her. Nothing remained. Nor her battle mates, crushed under its weight, not the atrium, not the clan. They had all died. Had the younglings survived after she told them to flee? Had they reached safety? Why did she leave them alone, letting pride win over sense, and move her to keep fighting a pointless battle instead of escorting them towards peace and as far away as possible from Emperor's Wake. What clan was left for her to protect, but those two? Tears mixed with debris and blood on her face as she finally returned her blade to its sheath. The monster roared and carried on, as if it barely registered Brightfeather had ever been striking it, drawing its cursed blood, or tearing skin and muscle from its leg. She fled, like she should have when it ate her clan leaders. There was nothing left. |
