Briar's family history was not unknown to her, nor did it ever scare her. Her previous clan was made up of other Naomi descendants like her, who sought shelter with each other and passed around their own knowledge of the Gatekeeper. Briar was seen as a mentor to many, as she made it a point to learn all that she could about their shared ancestor— it was a snapper's natural inclination to act as an encyclopedia after all. Before settling within this clan, she had spent years traveling across all of Sornieth in hopes of capturing every bit of knowledge. There was, of course, one weakness of hers. Briar had yet to undergo her metamorphosis. She could provide a list of what others had gone through and gained, could provide theories as to why, but could not describe her own experience. When younger generations clamored to her for help, she was at a loss. There was no doubt in her mind that she was a descendant, but for all her years of living, surely the metamorphosis would have happened by now? Were there others like her, who were an exception to the change that plagued the rest of them? She had to scold herself of her own brimming jealousy, but it hurt to think there would forever be a hole in her knowledge. Briar remained hopeful, but she worried then of what it had in store for her, like it was an unwatched pot at the precipice of boiling over. The Gatekeeper did not forget and neither would Briar. She had gone out one day to gather the harvest from the clan's garden, only to vanish without a trace. The walls of reality had swallowed her up and spat her back out, in a process that only took a few seconds, but felt like hours. The space around her was a flurry of bright and colorful lights that she struggled to close her eyes from. It absorbed any and all sound, making her dizzy, her throat sore from screaming that amounted to nothing. Her limbs changed, shrunk and stretched until she was unrecognizable. Her body ached as she was thrown back to the ground, lighter than she remembered. As the years went on, Briar would not regret a single part of her transformation, but in the moment it was traumatizing. To wake up in the foreign lands of the Shadowbinder's domain, to a fae face she did not know, it only gave her another to ache about. She would never see her old clan again. …She should take shelter in that cave ahead. The bright lights of the fungi call to her. |
