Biography

Smaragd
named after the Emerald Green Arborvitae conifer tree

Arbormancer

The clan was searching for a dragon to provide them with lumber and logs, as they didn’t yet have a reliable wood source. Shir and Midnight left runed flyers for this position at the trading posts they visited, and eventually met Smaragd. Once they deemed him suitable for the job, the Coatls used a little trick taught by Dumor to magically dissolve the remaining flyers they had scattered around; no new applicants were needed, after all.

Smaragd honed his Nature magic in the lush undergrowth below the roots of The Behemoth. With months of practice, trying out all kinds of magics, he found his specialty to be that of regrowth. As long as any part of a plant still has the hum of life within it, Smaragd reaches out to that life and encourages it to once again flourish. This is an especially useful skill when it comes to harvesting from plant life; lumbering included. The bright-eyed pearlcatcher can even bring the glow of life back into a tree stump, as long as the roots still draw nutrients from the soil.

As the Shifting Expanse is generally inhospitable to flora introduced from other parts of Sornieth, the gardening brothers Chera and Sam haven’t had any success with growing a diverse arboretum —or any non-native tree— in the dry sands near the clan’s Tower. Smaragd has attempted to help them raise some saplings, but they never grow large enough to be deemed harvestable for any larger projects calling for lumber.

Since then, Smaragd takes one trip a month to fly to the other elemental regions to harvest wood requested by his clanmates, Burke joining him for larger log transports (like redwood, for example). When he reaches a suitable grove, his Dryad familiar asks permission from the surrounding trees for her draconic companion to harvest from them. Once they find a permitting grove, Smaragd surveys the trees (with some help from the Stag spectre held in his pendant) and fells the amount needed. He then channels his magic through his trusty staff to bring life back into the fresh stumps. The trees don’t grow to their original size right away, but they take less than half the time to do so than without Smaragd’s magic.
