Not much is known about Nohigan, most just know him as the elusive gardener. He comes to the castle for his job, tends to the plants, and as soon as the sun starts setting, he will have already left. But none know to where, as they do not care. Perhaps it is because he refuses to speak, or perhaps no one is willing to speak to him. Regardless, he does his job as a gardener exceptionally well. Being the first to get this job since Lord Akushin's reign, he got his job through studying hard. Ever since Nohigan was little, he had noticed that the flowers in the orchard seemed a little drab, as if no one was really taking care of them. So he had taken it upon himself to study and become the castle's gardener.

Despite his job taking place in the castle grounds, he does not live there. His rank as a specialist in botany, it wasn't deemed important enough to allow him a life inside the castle. But it was never in his interests to earn himself a place there anyway. The luxuries from inside the castle didn't really matter to him, having lived life entirely as a mere peasant before he got his new position.

The gardener is often seen carrying around a small blue snake called Ao. When confronted about the snake, Nohigan will say that it was a gift from the person he loves the most. Rumors about who this 'beloved' is have started to appear amongst the demons inside the castle. Has the Gardener fallen for the head of housekeeping? They have been spotted conversing with each other, often ending in Nohigan giving him flowers. But when asked, Nohigan doesn't answer.

Nohigan still remembers the day clearly, it was starting to get colder, and the flowers had mostly all disappeared, except for the little blue flowers his dearest loved oh so much. At around this time, the demons at the castle would hold a festival, celebrating something about The Lord, Nohigan wasn't sure exactly what it was. However, ordinary peasants, like his beloved and himself, of course, were not invited. Still wanting to impress his dearest, they stayed out until the evening came and the dancing lights started to swirl in the sky.

They may have not been invited, but there was a chance one of them might be allowed to go. Every festival, one lucky person gets chosen by The Lord himself, seemingly at random. When the clocks strike twelve and the bells start to chime, he calls upon his clan to gather around the castle gates. Nohigan had hoped that, perhaps, his dearest will be chosen. He could already imagine the look of joy on their lovely face.. Something he would never forget.

When the time was finally right, all the members of clan were called upon to gather at the gates. This was one of the few times they actually got to see Lord Akushin himself, as he mostly remained inside the castle grounds. His beautifully embellished wings and his decorative drapes were a sight to behold. The Lord took a long glance at everyone, before finalizing his decision. He raised his arm and pointed at one of them. At Nohigan's love.

It took a moment before the realization settled and his dearest sprang up with joy.

"Oh! Can you believe it, Sweety? I got chosen, I'm allowed to enter!", they had exclaimed with a joy Nohigan had rarely heard before. He felt tears welling up in his eyes, it brought him so much joy to see his love so happy. He had wished this moment could have lasted forever, as he hugged his dearest.

He had to hold his composure as The Lord beckoned and Nohigan had to wave goodbye. But surely this wouldn't be the end. Perhaps Nohigan would even be allowed to go inside the castle to visit his love. And so he had returned home, all by himself. His bed felt empty without his dearest, but he was absolutely sure of it that they were enjoying their time inside the castle, finally experiencing the luxuries Nohigan could not provide for them. Somewhere inside of him he felt happy, for what happiness his dearest might be feeling right now. But at the same time, Nohigan could not shake the feeling of sadness at the lack of their presence.

"This will not be the last I see of her..", is what his thoughts were as he drifted into sleep.

Days would eventually pass, and his love would not return. But why? Nohigan was starting to get anxious, he had to find out. But he could not just enter the castle uninvited, he had to have a good reason. Perhaps he would be chosen at the next festival at the end of the month? No, the chance was way too small.. He had to enter the castle himself, and willingly. That's when he remembered the flowers in the orchard, drab and uncared for, an empty spot in the rankings. Yes, Nohigan would become the castle's first gardener since The Lord's reign.

And so he studied, day in and day out. During this period he would barely get any sleep, botany had become an obsession to him. An obsession to find out what happened to his love. However, there wasn't any school or the like that could teach Nohigan about this topic, all his knowledge would come from books. Most of the books he could get his hands on were old ones used by the doctors and physicians of the clan, they described the medical uses of plants but did not have much information on how to care for them, something he would end up experimenting on his own for.

After Nohigan's obsession had gifted him more than enough knowledge to obtain his new title, he had requested a formal meeting with the head of housekeeping. Perhaps it was because his attire was more formal than what his fellow clanmates would wear, but the demon seemed to pay no heed to Nohigan's former status and almost immediately accepted him when Nohigan proved his prowess in his field.

Despite this being an occasion where one should celebrate, Nohigan felt nearly no joy. No, what was important to him was merely the fact that he was now allowed to enter the castle's grounds as he pleased. Despite now having that ability, he didn't dare to look around inside the castle too much, even if his dearest could be there, somewhere. But that didn't matter, as the next festival was soon, another lucky person would be chosen by Lord Akushin. Despite working at the castle, he had never spoken nor seen The Lord himself yet.

The festival would start soon, and Nohigan had already taken his spot by the entrance of the castle's gates. He had everything planned out, everything would go perfectly, he would finally find out where they kept his dearest. He watched as The Lord picked out another peasant and walked them inside the castle, now was the time. Nohigan entered the castle shortly after, and watched as The Lord walked down the hall to the set of stairs that Nohigan had only heard be mentioned once before. His heart sunk as the realization set in. This flight of stairs led to the castle's dungeons.

Nohigan ran down the hall in a hurry, he didn't even care whether Lord Akushin heard him or not. He felt himself slow down as he reached the stairs. Perhaps it was actually out of fear of being caught now, or maybe he was scared of what he might see. However, the gardener pushed through. Every step felt like it took more strength than the last, as if gravity itself was trying to stop him. The scene he saw as he entered the dimly lit dungeons was worse than anything he could've thought of.

The peasant had been hung upside down, tied by his legs. For extra measure, his hands were also tied and a blindfold was tied around his hea. Was this part of some sick ritual? Or perhaps this was to lessen their fear. Then, he watched as The Lord brought his spear down. Despite the gruesome wound this should have made, there was almost no blood, as if the spear had made it all disappear. Nohigan didn't know why he kept watching and he was unsure whether the rest knew of his presence and let him watch. It didn't fully set in that this was what happened to his love as well, his brain didn't let him process it.

"Ready the embalming fluid." The Lord ordered to one of his servants.

Before Lord Akushin could have turned around and spotted Nohigan, he had already left to the orchards. As he tried processing what he had just seen, he looked around in the orchard. Had his love at least been able to see her favorite flowers before.. Tears started to well up in his eyes, perhaps if he had followed her into the castle he could have helped. But it did not, matter for he was too late. He tried to recall the scene, and the only words he had heard echoed in his head.

"Embalming fluid.. But of course..!"

His dearest is not gone! Of course she isn't, she would never have left this world without him. Tonight she shall return to him, just as he had once wished so much for. He began taking flowers from the orchard, something the demons surely would not approve of, but he only wished to see her once more, how could that be sinful? All her favorite flowers, and the most beautiful ones he could find went into a bouquet, tied together with a silken fabric as pure as the moon that shone upon him. Once his gift was finished, he left for the mausoleum.

The building wasn't far away from the castle, and was unguarded at night, perhaps out of respect for the resting ones. As Nohigan entered the resting grounds, he couldn't help but feel joy. He closely inspected the newest tombs, and read their names out loud, until finally... He started digging. There she laid, undisturbed in a peaceful rest. He opened the casket with his gardening tools and took a moment to look at his beloved again. The joy he felt was enough to make him tear up.

The fact that her body was cold and lifeless did not matter to him, in his eyes she was as beautiful and lovely as the last day he had seen her. She had been perfectly preserved, but even if she were to decay Nohigan had promised to mend her.
The gardener took the resting one out of the casket, handing her the bouquet as he lifted her up. He held her close to him, swearing that he would visit her every night and bring her gifts as he hugged her.

"Oh, my beautiful Hanayome, our love will be eternal!"
