s t o r y the only daughter of an inordinately wealthy noble family, Opaline of Albessard House, with her glacial-like beauty and hefty dowry, was the apple of every suitor's eye. the crown jewel every noble in high society wanted to have. she was so popular that whispers traveled overseas, so when the reigning king of the windswept plains came calling with a marriage request via messenger-fae, there was nothing else to do but accept. and so Heiress Opaline of Albessard House became Opaline Rocheleilles, the last imperial wife in a set of three, and part of a monarchy spanning centuries. a lineage that, unfortunately for her, had reached the end of its prosperity. not long after her wedding, the kingdom plunged into anarchy led by a siege on the castle. aided by her trusted attendants and personal guard, Opaline managed to flee before her life could be taken, marking her as the only Rocheleilles to survive the massacre. that is -- until it becomes apparent she's with child. presumed dead and with no way of contacting her family overseas, Opaline goes into hiding. she finds refuge in the wartorn fringes of the obsidian coastline. there she gives birth to two boys, fraternal twins; the true heirs of a dying dynasty. living in poverty and facing true adversity for the first time in her life makes Opaline cling to life fiercely. when she ran from the palace, she had nothing but the clothes on her back. she picks the gems off one by one, unsews the fabric into swaths, takes apart her gown piece by piece so that her maidservants can make the trip to the wharf and sell it. one of them takes the gems and never returns -- opaline can't fault her for her decision. what little can be haggled goes straight into their bellies, but then her oldest child gets sick. 'born with a weak heart,' her maidservant confides to her quietly and Opaline can hear what goes unspoken: he's not long for this world. she gives him to her maidservant, gives her the last of her gems, and gives her her last order: 'find him a healer and place safer than this. i will find you when the time comes.' her maidservant does as she bids and takes her baby. it feels akin to getting half her heart ripped straight from her chest. nothing binds her maidservant to fulfill such an order other than loyalty, but Opaline has little choice but to trust her. it takes a year before Opaline and her remaining attendants are rescued, having been found by happenstance by Opaline's cousin. Opaline returns to her homeland with only one child; she sends search parties, mercenaries, and head-hunters to search for her missing maidservant and child, but neither turns up. Opaline assumes the worst and an integral part of her warps with a profound grief. losing her eldest changes her fundamentally. she thinks about all the things she should've done differently; she shouldn't have trusted anyone, shouldn't have sent him away. even if it meant he would pass quicker, at least then she would've had the chance to hold him through it. she doesn't even have a body to bury. but all her regret and despair and fury are channeled into thoughts of the Rocheleillis lineage. her son is the last of the royal line, the only survivor of his name, and he deserves what is his due. the kingdom of the windswept plains belongs to him and Opaline will do right by him, unlike with her firstborn. her son will inherit his throne and she is going to be the one to sit him on it. she will be a king-maker. |
