once, solarium's scales had all been beautiful and golden and shining. ze was a mirror to the sun itself, a flashing ribbon when ze flew through the sky, a glittering beacon on any digsite. ze was a collector of coins amd currency--modern currency around the world as well as ancient long-abandoned kinds of money. ze loved gold coins best, loved the way they were minted, loved when they shone the way ze did. ze was part of an expidition into the flaxen field, where a great an terrible emperor now laid waste. the heavy tearing footfalls of luminax had revealed sunken catacombs, sealed away so very long ago. after word of it reached their glorious mother, she sent a select few into the underground. solarium was nervous, but eager. two broad shouldered gaolers accompanied hir, as well as four other scholars. beneath the earth, shrinking from the six-eyed gaze of the emperor, the team found something terrible. shade. bursting from the shattered corpses of artificial dragons, once-walking vessels meant to consume and destroy shade. void beasts clambered over shattered glass, metal, and stone, overwhelming the team. solarium survived, but scarred. hir once-glowing scaled had all but been consumed by shade-touch imperfections. the black tendril maws haunt hir dreams, even home in the familiar ruins of the sundial terrace. if one were to look closely, carefully, consistenly, they could see the imperfections spreading.
