Adventurous - Tenacious - Impulsive

"Weirdo!"

"Freak!"

"Monster!"

Words like this frequently rang in Alder's ears, and had ever since she could remember. She was different. The green metallic swirls and cherry red gemstones laid into her skin set her apart from her peers. No one had ever seen anything like them before. Even as a hatchling, most dragons treated her as if she was some sort of aberration, a mutant, a miscreation. Her own family treated her as such.

It was even worse when she started to learn Magic. Many dragons were capable of Magic, but their abilities differed. Most could only do a little, but a very few, with enough learning, could weave powerful spells that many regarded as miracles. Being in that second category could also set you apart from others, and unfortunately for Alder, she found out pretty early on that her Magical ability dwarfed that of her peers. She also discovered that if she performed particularly powerful Magic, her gemstones glowed. And that her natural ability to sense the emotions and magic of others around her was much more sensitive than any other Skydancer she came across. The dragons of her clan refused to teach her Magic any further out of fear.

She was constantly ridiculed, even by her own family.

Alder coped the nest she could by locking herself in her room with books. She read about Magic and tried to practice in secret, but doing so was difficult. She also became enthralled by tales of travel and adventure. She found maps of the various regions of Sornieth and copied them onto parchment, marking places she read about and wondering what she might find if she traveled there. She imagined what it might be like to find a place that she actually belonged. And what might happen if she found another dragon with a Filigree like hers. Did another even exist?

There was no one event that triggered Alder's departure from her home clan. Her frustration with the isolation she felt and her resentment of her family and the other dragons around her steadily grew until she could no longer take it. She packed up her maps, and left.

Alder traveled for quite some time. She was not really aware of how many months or years she spent on the road in solitude, only that she was now free to do as she pleased. At least when she was alone.

Alone, she could practice Magic.

She wandered the Sea of a Thousand Currents, taking in the sights and filling in her map. The going was slow, as the region was mostly sea and Skydancers were not named so because of their affinity for water. But still, she took in everything she could. As most dragons of Water who could do Magic, she found that she could manipulate this element with ease.

She met many dragons, most of whom shared the opinion of her home clan. That was a freak and something to be despised or feared. Eventually, Alder came to avoid other dragons when possible.

Next, she ventured into the Tangled Wood, a land covered in dark forest and shrouded by mist. Alder had read somewhere that her ability to do Magic should wane as she left her homeland, as she would no longer be able to draw on the elemental Magic of Water that flowed through the region to achieve her means. This power would be weak in adjacent realms, and grow weaker until she had only her internal store of Magic to draw upon. This did not seem to be the case. Alder could not manipulate shadows and disappear into the darkness the way a dragon hatched in the Tangled Wood could, but she found that she draw upon Shadow Magic in order to perform her usual spells. The energy felt a little different, but otherwise, it was the same as doing Magic in the Sea of a Thousand Currents.

The dragons here were different. Of course, there were towns and cities like anywhere else, but Alder was particularly fascinated by those that dwelled in the wilds between such settlements. Most claimed to be tricksters, thieves, or spies, and many wore odd assortments of garments or items taken from their victims or foes. It was their appearance that first gave Alder the idea to simply hide her Filigree by covering it with adornments distracting enough to keep others from noticing. The forests of the Tangled Wood provided ample supplies for this, and as she found what she needed, she crafted a mask and some other items out of wood and bright feathers.

Alder also learned some tidbits of Magic from these characters that she encountered. Her ability to sense emotions and use of Magic made her keenly aware of the presence of others, even those hidden by Shadow, as one Nocturne by the name of Darkvine learned the hard way. He was a thief who made his living preying on dragons traveling through the Foxfire Bramble, but he had an odd code of honor. Alder foiled his attempt to steal from her, and as he did for any who bested him, he offered her a favor. She asked him to teach her a bit of the Magic he had used, and he obliged.

Alder traveled next to the Sunbeam Ruins, named so for the decaying monuments and cities of ancient civilizations that covered the landscape. These were studied relentlessly by the scholars and architects of the region, as well as dragons from other regions of Sornieth. She had read about some of the great discoveries that had been made at some of these sights here about ancient civilizations, and read tales she hardly believed about the discovery of monsters buried in the earth just waiting to be discovered. She had always been fascinated by any writings about these ruins, and could not wait to see them for herself.

Alder found while traveling here that with her new garb, most dragons did not notice her abnormality. In fact, a lot of the dragons she encountered did pay her much attention. With one exception, a peculiar scholar by the name of Thales who seemed to spend half of his time buried in tomes or stacks of notes, and the rest pacing and muttering to himself.

She met Thales at the perimeter of one of the ruins of the Mirrorlight Promenade. She would have loved to explore them in depth, but she knew that access to most of the important ancient monuments and cities was controlled. She had only been hoping for a glimpse of this monument, perhaps to make a quick sketch, mark it in her map, and then continue on. Thales, however, was pacing the fenced perimeter in an agitated manner, muttering to himself now and then. From what Alder could sense and hear from afar, it seemed he should have been given access but was being delayed.

During one pass, he wandered close to her, and he suddenly stopped his chatting to no one. He approached her purposefully, and looked at her closely through his half-moon spectacles. Alder stood frozen. She knew he was no threat, but she was slightly taken aback by his manner of approach.

"Something seems different about you," he said finally, "but I can't put a finger on it. Where are you from?"

"Tsunami Flats," Alder replied dubiously, "why?" She could tell that this Coatl was extremely interested in her, very curious, and now excited.

"Water!" he exclaimed a little loudly for her taste. "The way the Magic flows through you, one would think you were a child of Light! Would you mind removing your mask for a moment, it would be lovely if I could see your eyes, I'm studying Magic and fundamentals of its use, they do say that eyes are the window to the soul and I have found that to be the case in my studies anyway, speaking of my studies, I was hoping to see this monument, I've seen sketches of some of the inscriptions in it but they don't seem to be all that accurate and I was hoping that seeing them in person would solve some of my questions about..."

Alder could not remember most of their conversation that day, as it had been mostly Thales speaking either to her or himself nonstop about his research or Magic or the monuments. It was all very fascinating, but the constant aural overload was a bit more than she was used to after being alone for so long. What she did remember is that he had somehow convinced her to remove her mask and been so excited by her Filigree that he actually could not speak for a moment.

Alder went with him back to his home, which had been mostly converted into a giant study, and answered his questions about her Filigree and use of Magic, and even demonstrated, while he pulled out notes and references and scribbled on bits of random parchment. She only asked in return that he teach her a little of his Magic, and he obliged. He then gave her the names of some other scholars and Mages throughout the Sunbeam Ruins that she should visit, and she did.

She was no closer to understanding her Filigree, as none of them had ever seen anything like it either, but each dragon here in the realm of Light that she visited took as much information from her as they could. They each promised that they would do some research or experiments, and hopefully have some answers if she should ever find herself in the area again. Alder vowed to each of them to return someday.

Alder traveled next to the Viridian Labyrinth. She was awestruck by the natural beauty of the Everbloom Gardens, the Gladeveins, and even the Shrieking Wilds. The forest there was dark, but in quite a different way than the forests of the Tangled Wood. The forest was dense with tall, thick trees, and the light filtered through the canopy leaving everything at the ground level bathed in dim, green light. Very rarely did the sun reach the forest floor. Everywhere, there was the sound of wildlife.

It was in the Shrieking Wilds that Alder first ran into real trouble in her journeys. She had come across Beastclans before and managed to either avoid them or outsmart them. So, though she knew that they existed in this great dense forest, she was not much worried about them. But unbeknownst to her at the time, they had become much more active and dangerous in this region than many were aware of.

Alder was walking through the woods, and had just placed her maps back in their case. She was lost. Alder could normally find her way easily, but in the deep forest, it could be difficult to be sure one was traveling in a straight line. At least when she was lost in the Tangled Wood, she still came across other dragons who could be coaxed into pointing her int he right direction. Here, there was no one. Just wilderness. Of course, it would be ideal to take to the air at this point and try to find a landmark this way, but the canopy was so dense that Alder was not sure she'd be able to find a way through it. Only dragons who knew the trees of the area well would be able to take flight from here, so Alder continued walking in what she hoped was the direction she wished to go.

She heard something, and stopped abruptly to listen. Hooves. Not too close, but close enough to be concerned. She only sensed one, but it was rare for centaurs to hunt or travel alone. Alder made to put distance between herself and this centaur. Better safe than sorry.

As she went, Alder could still sense a centaur behind her every so often, sometimes a little to her right or a little to her left. She was sure they were different centaurs now, but why could she not sense them all the time? They were in range. Obviously, they were attempting to deceive her sixth sense, and Alder had the distinct feeling that they were not following her, but driving her. She would have to take flight if she was to escape.

Alder leaped for the trees above her, grasping the lowest branches and pulling herself up into the canopy. She scrambled from branch to branch, trying to reach open air, but it seemed that one tree's branches gave way to a taller one, and then another. Arrows pierced through the air close to her, somehow making it through the thick branches and leaves, but she managed to dodge them. She finally made it to the top and jumped to take flight.

Alder realized too late that these centaurs would have caught her either way. She could make out a series of small clearings around her, spread out so that she would have to turn the opposite direction to avoid them entirely. At the speed she had taken, that would be impossible, and she could sense her pursuers still following her on the ground, and some strategically positioned ahead. She did the only thing she could think of, took the wind in her wings, and tried to make it through with enough speed to slip by before they were ready.

This failed.

A volley of arrows rose from the ground as she passed over. They ripped through her wings, and one struck her right shoulder, tearing into her flesh and becoming lodged. Her flight faltered, but she managed to recover well enough to keep from crashing into the trees. The pain in her shoulder was immense, but quickly fading.

Becoming numb.

She was still traveling at a good speed as the numbness spread from her shoulder. Control of her right wing became erratic. Alder spied another tiny clearing not too far away, turned toward it, and attempted to glide.

Breathing was becoming difficult. Alder was only barely aware of striking branches before all became dark.
