Born into the plague flight, Salem had only known the ugly side of dragonkind. She had been born into a very superstitious clan that made their home next to Rotrock Rim, the pool of rot in the center of the scarred wasteland. As soon as they saw the white skeletal figure outlined on her pelt, they took it as a bad omen. They tried to kill her. That’s when Salem learned, as just a hatchling, that nobody was to be trusted.
Word spread of the ‘wandering omen’, as she was known in the plague region. Her pelt gained many scars from dragons trying to pick fights with her, but she just wanted to keep to herself. She wanted somebody anybody to care about her, just to know that there was someone out there that did.
She wandered all around the plaguelands. Other lands were scary and unknown, and she was worried about the same thing happening to her there too. She was never told much about the outside flights. Unfortunately, she also strayed to places where she wasn’t supposed to be.
After a scuffle with a Mirror who had chased her into the quarantine zone, someone from her original clan who swore she was the source of its misfortune and had to be put down. She got too close to one of the pools. Her back right foot slipped inside one of the pools before she managed to overpower her attacker. The foot was badly burned. It was disfigured and never healed properly.
That encounter was too close for her liking, so she finally made the decision to leave the plaguelands, deciding that the other lands had hope and a promise of a better life. They certainly looked better than where she was.
She set her sights on the Foxfire Bramble. A tangle of thorns that lined one side of the scarred wasteland, keeping it from overwhelming the flight beyond. She had always been curious about it. Being a Gaoler, she couldn’t fly over it, so she walked alongside it, looking for the spot where the vines looked the thinnest. With great effort, she managed to squeeze her self between two tight vines, long scars being left on her pelt from the thorns.
On the other side of the Foxfire Bramble, a clan of dragons made their home next to the wall. It was the first contact Salem had made with dragons that didn’t outright want to hurt her. She hoped it meant a new beginning. She was leaving the plague lands behind, after all.
The leader of the clan was a valiant Imperial named Cassian. He had a dark purple pelt that cloaked himself in black. Under the dark appearance, however, Salem could see steadfast resolve, and a fearless determination to protect those he loved. After spending a lot of time with him, she started to fall in love.
Over Salem’s stay in the clan, several dragons began to get sick. The Clan members lashed out at Salem, saying it was her fault because she came from the plague flight, and every single time, Cassian stood up for her, calling his fellow clan members out on just how unfair they were being.
In the end, though, they were right. The truth of it all was that her mishap in the quarantine zone had led to her unknowingly bringing an illness into the clan. It just didn’t affect her because she was a plague dragon.
One by one, each dragon dropped around her. Didn’t matter the age, didn’t matter how healthy they were, they died like all the others. Then Cassian got sick.
Salem spent all her time curled around him, talking to him and keeping him company as he faded away.
In the end, he left her alone. They had never even tried for eggs. Only when he laid there, dying, did she confess her love, and he admitted he loved her back. She stayed there for hours, long after he passed, head propped gently on top of her love’s, weeping tears that would not stop.
That is how Rowan found her when he led a group of dragons from his clan to do some scavenging and hunting in Shadow Territory.
