Nightmare Sans is the guardian of negative emotions and nightmares. They are brothers, while Dream is the guardian of positive emotions and dreams, but they have been enemies for a long time, as they have opposite views on how to balance the multiverse.

Nightmare and Dream were born from an experiment using apples from The Tree of Feelings and DNA from two different Rifters hence why Dream and Nightmare although technically twin brothers look so different and have different abilities.

Nightmare was corrupted long ago from eating the negative emotion apples from the side of the tree he protects after being bullied by those of his universe, after being tricked by a malevolent human spirit in the apple. The real Nightmare is still in there thanks to his emotions and memories of his brother.

When Dream finally saved Nightmare through a The Amulet of Hope that purified his soul he still kept his black bones and indigo eyes, his appearance was basically the same as it was, except he now had his old personality and self back he chose to wear his original purple clothes with some modifications. Although scarred by past experiences and being corrupted he’ll always be grateful to his brother for not losing hope all these years.
