Biography

They called him a witch, so that is what he became.

Haemon has always been of the darker persuasion, according to his peers. Often masked, rarely seen in the day, and never without the company of potions and other mystic items hanging from his belt, he had a talent for inspiring unease without even lifting a claw. It's something in the way he carries himself, too, always sinuous and sneaking, never as vibrant as a Spiral should be.

But let them talk, he thinks, because as long as he continues to make a profit, it's not as if he's concerned.

Maybe it's odd that he's a merchant, and not a servant of dark forces, like some dragons would suggest. The most ominous thing he does is heal others, a talent he keeps hidden in order to preserve his reputation. It's best employed on the severely injured and diseased, a by-product of his Plague heritage, and he only employs it as a last resort. If his customers knew he had a heart, that the twisted smile lurking below the mask could be softened, he might lose business.

Truly, it's shocking how much business eerie behavior can drum up, and he's not about to throw that away.

But he can be swayed, and his healing arts can be brought to light. When the right price is reached, Haemon is more than happy to swirl some tonics into existence, to caution against side effects that the brew may or may not have. He likes his customers desperate, in suspense, and very rich; they often need his help the least, and have the means to afford his efforts.

Those without means, though? They strike him in the heart, and if anyone receives his care under cover of night, it's the dragons who would fade away without it, the ones he could never take a single gem from. Enya was one such dragon, too, and she is possibly the patient he has spent the most time working to heal.

He met her when she was still a Mirror, when her hide was pockmarked by scars from infected wounds, and one foreleg had healed hideously from a break, leaving her with a vicious limp that kept her at a distance from any pack. Her wings were in even worse shape than her leg, mangled as if they had been crushed, with membranes that had torn and never healed, never knitted themselves back together. She was smaller than other Mirrors he had met despite being a young adult, and it was clear she had been bound to the earth most of her life, always lagging behind on account of her injuries. Worse still, he saw the way she watched the other dragons, the ones that sprinted by without a care. There was longing in her eyes, the kind that came from knowing exactly what she was missing out on. Once, Haemon realized, she had been agile and carefree, but it was long ago.

Enya kindled pity in his heart, and he took it upon himself to find a way to restore some of her health. His primary goal was to ease her pain; after getting to know her and taking to some of the other dragons of Clan Dark-Blood, he learned she did not move without experience pain in one form or another. Eliminating that was the first step in returning her freedom, if only in part. At the very least, he could see to it that she no longer had to dread each movement she made. No one deserved to be in that kind of pain all their life.

But he wanted to do more still after he had devised a tonic that eased her aches, and with her permission, he began to experiment. His instinct for healing magics led him, along with long years of medicinal, material knowledge, and with a few hiccups along the way, he slowly approached a solution. It wasn't guaranteed, and he had to travel far to finish his work, but Enya had become something of a good friend to him, and he wanted more for her.

His return was long awaited, longer than it should have been. Acquiring the final ingredients he needed to heal her had taken a great deal of time and money, but the result, he hoped (maybe even prayed) would be worth it. When he arrived at Clan Dark-Blood once more, he gave Enya three tonics and a Skydancer scroll, instructing her to take them at the same time. He couldn't promise it would work, wouldn't build up her hopes that high without complete certainty, but he told her he had faith, and that was enough.

Ultimately, it did work. Enya healed completely, her scales taking on a new, healthy pattern in her changed shape. Her journey is perhaps Haemon's greatest success, and he is proud of her for persevering for so very long. Now that she is able to move freely once more, she even travels with him on some trade outings, the only thing in the world that makes him seem less threatening. She softens some of his reputation, sure, but if that's the price to pay for her happiness, so be it.
