Biography
Ennui
Ennui joined Mab’s circus as a young adolescent and has stayed with them ever since. He specializes in the high-flying, daring art of acrobatics. Unfortunately, when you’re a dragon with natural high-flying stunt capabilities, his art comes off as much less impressive than it would be were he ground-bound. Therefore, Ennui has to go above and beyond to impress the audience: flaming hoops, juggling midair, elaborate stunts, contortionism, Ennui’s tried his claws at it all, in hopes of securing those much-coveted cheers.
Outside of his circus performances, some dragons think Ennui comes off as listless or bored, but that’s not quite true. He’s usually just very deep in thought, planning out his next show-stopping routine that will blow all his previous acts out of the water. Ennui strives for success in everything he says and does, and his mind rarely strays from this singular goal.
In the same way that Duskfall looks up to Mab as an older sister, Ennui looks up to Lurk as an older brother. Lurk was a little older than him when Ennui joined the circus, and Ennui latched closely onto him as a mentor and friend. While Lurk’s advice was often mysteriously and cryptically conveyed, the two of them had a close enough bond that it made sense to Ennui. Ennui was devastated when Lurk left the circus to become an ambassador, and spends a lot of time visiting him in his new den, begging for him to come back, regardless of the diplomatic consequences. Every time, Lurk gently refuses, and every time, Ennui sulks away and vows to come back and ask again the next day.
Ennui doesn’t like to talk about the family he ran away from, and nobody puts any pressure on him to do so. Running away to join the circus is common enough, and as long as Mab welcomed him with open wings, he’s part of their family now, now and forever. The circus is the only family he needs.
Like all members of Mab’s circus, Ennui has clung onto Mab’s ideology that there is no good or evil, only entertainment or a bore. However, since he joined at an older age than circus members like Duskfall and (formerly) Lurk, he often finds that he has a harder time sticking to this philosophy, and finds himself making moral judgments outside of this paradigm. He tries to remember not to immediately declare something “good” or “bad” on a gut instinct, but not doing so can be extremely difficult for him.
