While her mother was not afflicted with the sickness that seemed to plague their lineage, Liliana was only too aware that as her father's daughter, she was cursed to nest only once and what's more, become sick to do so. The whole thing seemed drastically unfair. Furthermore, the older women of her family seemed determined that the lineage should carry on. Liliana didn't understand it, a hatchling was a hatchling, what did it matter if they hatched from a clutch of your own if you could love and care for them just the same?

Though Leor and Lanternfly had done their best to shield all their children from the pressures of feeling obligated to nest, most of their effort was directed at Crayus who was assumed to be the most fertile, and over time with the little hints, or passing questions around the subject, Liliana developed almost a disdain for having children of her own. Instead she vowed if she were to ever want to have children she would adopt, and none of her children would ever have to worry about having children of their own or getting ill when they did. The only time she would even consider clutching would be if she found a dragon worthy of being her mate. Liliana didn't want to be led only by her heart only for her mate to leave as had happened to Janani. No, if Liliana had a family she would do it right. But she couldn't do it here.

So with tearful goodbyes to her parents and sisters, and relief secreted in her chest, Liliana set off to forge a new life for herself. She could have gone anywhere in Sornieth but she loved the Tangled Woods and so she contented to wander the woods for a while, taking in the beauty of the land, until her wings took her to the Foxfire Bramble. Here she found a great city dug into the ground and built up into the climbing thorns, an amalgamation of nature, magic and technical engineering like nothing she'd ever seen before.

Liliana plunged into this new environment with abandon, happy to explore and leave any thoughts of her family or having one behind. But this forgetfulness could not last, and the sight of large visiting family of mirrors brought the thought of her own family abruptly to the forefront of her mind. She hadn’t so much as sent a note home saying where she was since she left. She could have younger siblings by now, or even be an aunt, she’d have no idea.

Overwhelmed, Liliana sought out a quieter section of the city and found herself wandering the paths of the forum, ensconced deep in the wood of the brambles far above the hustle and bustle of the main lair. It was here she met a Veilspun named Stop, who asked if she was feeling alright. Without thinking, Liliana poured her heart out to him as they walked to his corner of the forum, her family, her fears of childbirth, how hard it was to be alone but how she didn’t want to go home.

At the end of it, hours later, Liliana felt as if a weight had been lifted. Stop hadn’t said much, but he’d listened like no one had before and when she had finished he gently suggested even if she didn’t want to return home, a letter might help ease the pain of distance. It was a fine idea, except, as Liliana explained, she wouldn’t begin to know how to get the letter to arrive. The observatory her family lived in was fairly insular when she left and while there was a better known inn and abbey of Aberrations nearby she had no idea if sending the letter to either of those places would get it passed to where it was supposed to go.

The mention of the abbey, seemed to rouse a spark of curiosity in Stop and as soon as Liliana mentioned the matron, MilknSilk, Stop began to laugh. As it turned out, he was a member of the family in the abbey and still wrote back. He was due to send a letter soon and suggested that Liliana include her letter sealed inside his and addressed to the observatory to be passed on.

Gratefully, Liliana jumped at the chance, though she struggled to put her thoughts to paper. When the letter was finally sent off, she thought she would feel relieved. Instead she fretted about the reply, even in her dreams. Fortunately the city offered plenty of distractions, but even so, every few days she found herself in the forum to see if a letter had arrived for her. She began to worry that her long absence had caused the family to disown her but when her letter did arrive, it was almost a book. Every member of the family had taken the time to write a little something back, though the majority of it was from her parents. They expressed how happy they were she had written and how proud of her they were for her following her own mind. They missed her of course, the whole family did, but she could always visit and if need be there would always be a place in the observatory for her to return to.

The letter was a balm for fears Liliana didn’t even know she had and for the first time in a long time, Liliana felt that no matter what happened, everything would be okay.

Generation Two Observatory Aether, still Fertile
Janani's bloodline is subjected to a rare hereditary condition that limits female Aethers to being unable to lay more than a single clutch of eggs. As a result, the mothers of the lineage care deeply for their children and extended family, and enjoy hearing about their lives now and then.
