Biography

Amphitrite
Messenger
Neutral Good

PkKAmaj.png
Amphitrite is the clan's premier messenger, who prides herself on speedy deliveries. Your message will be delivered as quick as physically possible, guaranteed! No enchanted kite can compete with the sheer speed of this nocturne. Extra charge if you actually want to make sure it goes to the right place.

Amphitrite delivers messages both within the clan and to neighbouring clans. However, she prefers shorter journeys, and thus won't deliver to places more than a week's flight away. The actual courier dragons handle the long-distance mail, much to Amphitrite's ire. She doesn't like being outdone, and so she practices flying ever faster, so that she can increase how far she can travel in a week. At this rate, she'll probably end up testing Alder's experimental short-range displacement device, in hopes of being even quicker.

Riku sends quite a few messages along with her, but she won't tell anyone where they're sent to. Of course, it's questionable whether she even knows where they're going. It's likely Riku just gives his contact a general location, and then they search the area for odd unidentified packages.

Messenger might not seem like the sort of job that requires wearing armour, but Amphitrite insists it's necessary. What if some other dragon tries to intercept her mid-flight to steal the mail? Or if a few centaurs try to shoot her down with longbows? Those waiting for messages deserve to know with confidence that no amount of danger will prevent the mail from being delivered. The rest of the clan agrees she should be wearing armour, but only because Amphitrite keeps tying to deliver messages to dragons who are a bit busy being in mortal combat with monsters at the time.

She spends much of her off-work hours racing other clan members in an attempt to improve her speed. While nearly infallibly victorious against most dragons, she has yet to defeat Atuin. This is because he cheats constantly, although Amphitrite is blissfully unaware of it. The wizard has a whole bevy of 'be somewhere else' artefacts in his collection, while Amphitrite's magic is limited to subconsciously giving herself the benefit of a tailwind. That, and a little shield of wind in front of her face that prevents anything from getting into her eyes. The goggles truly are useless.

Amphitrite's constant over-straining herself to go faster means that she often returns from a mail flight late at night, exhausted and injured. Fortunately, Simoeis is always around to bring her to Bozatrox for treatment, the guardian's empathy servos running at maximum speed as she tries to convince the nocturne not to push herself any harder. But to Amphitrite, Simoeis is a role model, able to keep going through thick or thin with effectively no limit. So to the guardian's dismay, by the time the sun dawns, Amphitrite is only more resolved to push herself to the edge of her ability.

One thing few dragons know is that Amphitrite holds grudges for a long time. She's too kind to ever make those grudges obvious, but there's dragons she's upset with for things that happened years ago. Beating her in a race means you can expect your mail delivered last for the foreseeable future. (Atuin can go get his own mail.)

She's absolutely tone-deaf. Don't try sending a singing telegram.

Amphitrite's introduction to the clan was a complete accident. Back home in the Windswept Plateau, she was always competing with her nestmates for the title of best flyer. When she had nearly reached adulthood, she made one last attempt to snatch the position from her brother. A brave and utterly foolish flight into the eye of The Twisting Crescendo, with everything at stake.

Knowing nobody in her family would allow her to attempt such a thing, she left in the dead of night without telling anyone. This begs the question of how she planned to prove she completed her task, but Amphitrite probably doesn't have an answer either. In any case, she dove headfirst into the great vortex, and was immediately sent tumbling by the turbulence.

Despite the fact that she never stood a chance, she did survive. (Clearly.) As she unwillingly gathered speed in the hurricane, Amphitrite channelled all of her magical power for one last ditch escape attempt. With all of her might, she managed to blast herself out of the Crescendo, sending herself sailing through the sky. She sent herself so high that she eventually passed out from the lack of air, and thus was spared the experience of crashing into the ocean near the Starfall Isles.

She was later dredged up by the island, her oversized scarf having apparently served as a flotation device. Bozatrox nursed her back to health, and she decided to stay with the clan. After all, going home would mean she'd have to admit to her brother that he was the best flyer.
