Soyuz

Soyuz felt her heavy garments weigh down on her shoulders. These days they just felt like burdens upon her, restricting her movement. But how else was she supposed to earn recognition? Dragons expected a witch like her to be flashy, show her power. And the fabric weaved over her body did have power - her staff carried intense magic, her floating candles supplied incense needed for performing spells, the jewel on her tail protected her from the Evil Eye… and the hat completed the look. She didn’t hate her wear, she just wished she didn’t have to wear all of it in public. She preferred staying inside to practice magic, but since her talent for illusions had become popular with the hatchlings, and her other spells, the more useful ones, had to be “donated” for “the good of the Clan.” She just wished she had kept her prowess a secret.
“Soyuz! The hatchlings are ready for your show!” Came a whispered voice from outside the heavily-scented tent that she called home. The Nocturne straightened her hat, adjusted her wing ribbons, and stepped out into the open.
A cluster of the tiny dragonets were huddled in a whispering group, but all attention was directed to her once she stepped through the flap of her tent. Their murmurs fell silent, as eyes of many different flights were shone upon her.
“Are you going to show us magic?” A small voice piped up from the middle of the crowd.
“Yeah! Yeah! Magic! Wow, magic is so cool! I wish I could be a witch like her.” The excited phrases burst from the group, and their praise warmed Soyuz’s heart for a moment. This was what she wanted… to be recognized for her magic. And this was a start. While fame inside one Clan may not be much, but it was a step towards her ambitious goal. She could imagine it now, all of Sornieth would look upon her skill in awe. The Great Soyuz, they would call her. The Talented Soyuz. A smile crept onto her face, and she pulled a lamp from the depths of her robes.
“Now, children, watch closely. I’m going to summon a serpentine spirit from the depths of this lamp…”
