As much as he fancied himself an engineer, he had to admit his failure at the one key engineering feat that sustained the clan: the redirection and maintenance of the waterfall at the clan's doorstep. Elena had succeeded not by dint of ingenuity or resourcefulness, but strong water magic. Kaivu was never satisfied with the solution - there had to be something simpler, more elegant - but he had to admit it worked, and well. What else could elemental magic do? What other problems, big and small, could it resolve? And how could it profit the clan? |
It was Hana that found the egg while scavenging one dark winter night. It was a nocturne egg, the first that the clan had seen. No one knew where the parents were so they hatched it.
Everyone was surprised by how much little Nyla, as they named the baby, looked like Hana who had found her. The entire clan raised Nyla, but she was known as Hana’s little girl.
Being a typical nocturne, Nyla wanted to do what everyone else was doing. She would follow the other members of her clan around and imitate them, asking endless questions. This annoyed some dragons, but most were amused, and some even found her helpful. Rhen taught her how to take care of the birds, and Nyla cares for them when Rhen is not home.
As she grew older Nyla became the dragon that was always there, and always helpful. If you needed a hand, Nyla would be nearby and happy to pitch in. She also is one of the first dragons to greet any new arrivals to the lair. Some new dragons are surprised to find a ‘mysterious’ nocturne so open and friendly. Some of the dragons in the lair are surprised that the ‘little girl’ of quiet, shy Hana is always in the middle of everything. Nyla is an outgoing dragon that enjoys surprising people.
Now that she is a grown dragon with hatchlings of her own, the relationship between Hana and Nyla has changed. Nyla is no longer Hana’s little girl, now she is Hana’s best friend.
