Midi hides his anxiety well--he doesn't want to be seen as weak. But, boy, is he anxious. About everything, really. This anxiety has taken root and shows itself in Midi's refusal to step outside of Bastion's walls.

Regular paladin duties include patrols through the Hewn City, but Midi has not been on such a patrol in some time. This is unusual, but he uses his position on the Council as an excuse: he's simply too busy to go, he claims.

In reality, the threat of the Shade has him stuck in place. He tries to use this fear to the benefit of his city by working to build up defenses within the walls, but he fears it isn't enough. Midi feels utterly useless.
