When he was a child, Elegy got lost in some snow-choked woods, and something he can’t remember the face of helped him leave. The problem is that now - as often as every few days - he stumbles into pockets of magic that hum discordantly, tripping him up no matter how much he flattens his ears back and grits his teeth until they crack. He’d run if he could, but it’s almost as if the sounds can touch him, trapping him in a tangled maze of clashing half-tones and spiralling glissando.

He’s having one of these episodes when he feels a cold, gentle claw rest on his shoulder. “Start here,” a voice murmurs, guiding him gently to the first ringing note of what unravels into a light, sparkling tune, a waltz with the flavour of a folk song. She dances backwards, leading him out, her voice cutting clearly through the mess.

Elegy learns to love music again as he learns to love her.
