Gratefulness was something as woven into her DNA as were the vines intertwining her wings. Her mother had hand-crafted her robes, her armor, her decorum. Her mother had sought and built their home when her grandfather couldn't've -- carved them a home in the belly of a beast that saw them as parasites, as unwelcome, as a stains waiting to be washed out.

The disease her grandfather carried was as brash as the scars it left on his body, but over time, the daughter's mother taught her that those could heal. Healing was something written in a organism's code, something her family had long manifested and perfected; something that had turned her family from parasites, to creators of their own antidote. To Vorwenna, home was family. She'd never thought the scars that wouldn't heal would be on her father's mind. She'd never thought that he was something she could stand to lose.
