"And then there stole into my fancy, like a rich musical note, the thought of what sweet rest there must be in the grave."

As the Antumbral of the clan, it is Arius' job to mete out punishment whenever it is deemed necessary, a duty he fulfills succinctly and without complaint. It is rare to come across him when his services are not called upon, but those who have encountered him can all agree upon one thing; it's best to stay upon his good side whenever possible.

If he even possesses one, that is. Others have speculated that he might lack the faculties to feel emotions at all in the first place, as he takes to both leisure and sentencing with the same amount of severity.

Despite his quiet, withdrawn personality, it's clear that he is one of the most trustworthy individuals within the clan, as well as the most reliable. Only Lady Viorel possesses the means to summon him forth when he is abroad, and he seems to answer directly to her despite formally serving Queen Tinuviel.

Viorel is - of course - fiercely loyal to Her Majesty, so this particular conflict of interest has never seemed a cause for concern.

Quiet hatchlings often grow into quiet adults, an observation that has always been fact when it comes to Arius himself. Even prior to his rebirth post death, he had always preferred to listen rather than speak, making his own thoughts known only when he had thoroughly thought through every possible outcome of lending them voice. As such, he had a mostly uneventful childhood, and was often regarded as a polite, well-mannered young dragon.

But even the most dutiful of sons often dream of adventure, and once he was old enough, he set out on his travels, intending to see more of the world.

Arius was not among those present during the first days of the clan's inception, and would have likely not joined at all had his fledgling wanderings not brought him to cross paths with Lady Caissa. He first met her along the side of a rarely traveled road, where she happened to be resting within a nearby cave after having been injured by a rough landing in a bad storm. He offered to help tend to her injuries, and in turn she told him of how she had gotten separated from her sovereign, and would need to find her way back as soon as possible.

It was made clear as they remained together within their shelter for a time that Caissa's wings were in no shape to bear her aloft, and after careful deliberation, Arius offered to escort her on foot.

The two spent several months together, slowly following after Tinuviel's great exodus and getting to know each other better on the road. Feelings of friendly camaraderie began to sprout, bloom, and finally deepen into something more.

It was on another stormy day, not unlike the one where they first met, that the curse of Arius' bloodline finally caught up to him. Coincidentally, it was also the same day that the two of them finally caught up with Tinuviel's errant faction. Arius and Caissa came across the scene of a great battle, and neither hesitated when it came to leaping into the fray to help stem the tides of war in any way possible.

Arius himself had never been much of a warrior, and Caissa's wings had still yet to fully mend from her crash landing prior to their meeting. Tinuviel's forces were formidable, capable fighters, but most had surrounded their queen to ensure her safety, thus leaving no extra soldiers to come to the aid of Arius and Caissa in their untimely arrival.

The last sight he could remember seeing was the glint of sharp claws bearing down with the intent to harm Caissa, and then his body had moved to intercept the blow and take it onto himself to protect her.

There was pain.

Then nothing.

...

Then a voice, whispering to him from nowhere and everywhere, all at once.

"Your time has run out, and your story has come to its end. Will you accept your fate, or defy it?"

He thought of the warmth of the sun against his scales, the breeze beneath his wings. He thought of the gentle lull of the waves against the beach, and how the sand felt below his claws.

He thought of Caissa.

"Such defiance is not without cost. Are you prepared to pay the price?"

When breath filled his lungs once more, the chaos of the battlefield had long since faded into that of a quiet, moonlit night. Arius clawed his way back to consciousness, coughing and gasping, feeling along himself in search of wounds that were no longer there. Bones had mended, gashes had closed, and he had been left here alone in the wake of war.

Well... Not entirely alone.

It was then that he first met Varona within the waking world, and the familiar explained the terms of their newborn pact. His life had been restored from the precipice of death, and in turn his soul was now bound to servitude. He was to take the form of a reaper, to walk the halls of the underworld, and to keep an eternal watch over the thin line between life and death itself. So long as he kept his end of the bargain and remained dutiful in his vigil, he would be permitted to remain amongst the living and those he cared for.

Yet, his time within death's embrace did not leave him unchanged. Where he once possessed a heart that skipped and raced with joy and sadness, the one that beat in his chest now remained a steady, solid tempo. Emotions that could have once overwhelmed him now felt dull, as if barely clinging to existence. He could still feel, of course, but nowhere near to the intensity he once had.

"The dead may have laid claim to your services, but the living still require some of your time as well."

There, beneath the light of that same full moon, came his second visitor.

Lady Viorel's place as Oracle offered her knowledge far beyond mortal means, and she addressed him with the familiarity of an old friend despite it being their first meeting. Through her, he learned that the battle had been won, and that Caissa herself had survived in the wake of his sacrifice. He learned that a full turn of the moon had passed since he had breathed his last, and he learned that she had not come to find him without reason.

Tinuviel's new clan was in need of a judicator, someone to pass along final judgement to those who turned upon kith and kin. Should he accept the role, it would afford him the opportunity to continue to protect his lady Caissa, all the while keeping the balance between life and death in check.

And thus he became a reaper and the Antumbral both, remaining within the underworld until Viorel summoned him forth to pass judgement.

His relationship with Caissa, however, is steeped in a considerable amount of uncertainty. Arius knows he still cares for her, but he cannot seem to relocate the same intensity of affection he once possessed at the mere sight of her. Outwardly, his quiet yet warm demeanor has long since shifted to one of cold detachment, something he is sure must bother her somewhat.

Still. Even if he can no longer love her the same way he longs to, the two still make time for one another whenever he is back among the clan. Formally, neither consider each other to be their partner any longer, but remnants of old feelings still occasionally result in the odd hatchling here or there.

It may not be the most romantic of rendezvous each time they reunite, but they are both alive.

Which is more than enough to make up the difference.

Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All of Pilgrim's descendants were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.
