The brightly colored nocturne behind the Black Candle Inn's bar sets two cups of spiced wine on the counter. "I've heard rumors, you know. We have nobility in our midst now. Not like the archivist. Genuine, a direct descendant."

"What does it matter?" The garishly dressed imperial before her shakes his head. "I offered to introduce him to suitable matches, and he refuses every one. Says he doesn't want to use his status like that."

"A shame, really. He'd be a lovely catch."
Dry leaves litter the forests near the Hewn City, a bronze dragon curled among them, his pattern camouflaging him against the orange, sun-dappled foliage. He opens his eyes, the leaves beneath him rustling as he lifts his head.

In the shade of the old tree, he curls against a dark, shimmering dragon. Lazy, content. The forest sings here, and he listens. Even as the leaves fall, and branches wither and die, he listens.
