Chaffinch
Messenger

As the clan's only messenger, Chaffinch is most dragons' first point of contact with the clan, assuming he sticks around long enough to actually speak to anyone. He is profoundly skittish and has an unfortunate tendency to toss packages in the general direction of their recipient and run off, which has mostly been handled by quietly reducing the amount of fragile things being shipped. Still, he's getting better about it; sometimes he even waits for a reply.

Despite his rather haphazard handling of the position, no one has ever suggested giving the job to someone else, mostly because Chaffinch is better at it than anyone else who's tried, package-tossing notwithstanding. He knows his geography better than, let's face it, almost the entire rest of the clan, and combined with an impeccable sense of direction this means he always completes his deliveries on time and has only occasionally been delayed getting back. Most of his favorite routes are ones others are unable to follow. He may not be much of a flier, but he certainly can leap.

Closer to home and in the company of someone he likes he's almost aggressively cheerful, a fountain of terrible puns and cheesy pickup lines and other awful jokes, and he doesn't quite know how to handle situations where humor isn't appropriate. He is also a frequent prankster and constantly trying to rope his clanmates into ridiculous schemes, which themselves can have mixed results. He always takes pains not to hurt anyone, and he's never made any actual enemies, but certainly a few dragons will never again eat anything he offers them.

Chaffinch is one of the few who remained with the clan after what's sometimes called the Great Calamity, and as such there are a few subjects he won't talk about even in his more serious moments. He'll sometimes vanish for days at a time, though never more than a week, since that might interfere with his duties. No one can figure out where he's going, nor does he usually even acknowledge that he was gone.

He is absolutely terrible at confrontation and has trouble refusing all but the most unreasonable of requests, exemplified by a somewhat infamous incident in which he stole a baby. (He did insist on going back to pay the fee, and he brings this fact up any time someone mentions the incident in his presence.) Since then he's become slightly better at sticking up for himself. But only slightly.
