The unwinding of a clockwork key
As a hatchling, you never really understood what it meant to begin the Search - what it was that pulled children away from their parents, mates from their beloveds, and sisters from brothers. It seemed like a terrible thing, to gouge rifts between families and friends, to separate those who had loved each other for years.
As a hatchling, you were a right fool.
It pulls you from your own clan, the Search, and they see you go with misty eyes and grins spanning wide rows of sharp teeth, and they are happy for you, because they know what it is to find a Charge. What it is to become whole. You leave elated, following a pull that gives you longing but not direction.
You think calling a Guardian’s urge to travel in Search a pull is inaccurate, though the use is widespread. It is more of a deep-seated pining for something you cannot tangibly grasp, a restlessness not of the heart but of the spirit. You are a dragon half and you will scour the lands until you are a dragon whole.
Well. That sentiment is present, but, as it happens, is not entirely true.
You do travel tirelessly. stop counting the days after you hit months, and traverse the continents. Leaving the Gladekeeper’s domain would once have terrified you, you think, but you find yourself hardly noticing when the emerald forests and lively aqueducts give way to dark leaves and glowing mushrooms, and then dry ruins, until you find yourself in a land of hardscrabble existence. A storm rages unceasing above you and the air is charged in a way that makes you shiver. The land around you is arid and the organisms that inhabit it peer at you from shadowy cracks. You are as exhausted as the land around you.
You trudge on, unsure when your gait faltered from flying leaps, to tempered trotting, to this, and don’t want to dwell on the thought.
You find a clan.
They see the world differently from you, and it is apparent immediately. The parched plains of the domain of Lightning do nothing but energize them, and it is electrifying. They are small but do not permit a moment of peace or languor. Crafts are erected within days, trinkets within hours, and they are full of things you could never have dreamed of. They live not to serve nature, but to harness it, to dominate and tame the lightning that arcs for endless miles across their skies, and this shocks and very nearly offends you to the core.
They create automatons, squealing compilations of metal and sparks that move but don’t think. Their machinations terrify you - but they are as filled with the life of the land as your home, the life of these dusty, static-filled wastes. You can feel their spirit, and, well.
You’ve been trudging long enough. It is time for you to find a reason to fly.
