Biography

V E R I T A S
The Void Hound
"You’ll soon be hearing the chime
Close to midnight.
If I could turn back time
I’d make it alright.
How could it end like this?"

“Don’t let the Voidsoul overtake you.”

Those words echoed in Vera’s fading mind. She had been trained to suppress the dark whispers and urges that came with her lineage. Years and years of rigorous exercises in focus and meditation had honed her into a reliable weapon against the Shade. Yet now, her vision blurred. Something pooled around her, bright crimson against the dark marble. Was she bleeding? She could barely feel her injuries over the splintering pain that scraped against the inside of her head. “What is. . . Happening to me?” It was difficult to form those words. Did she hear someone laughing? She tried to remember, but her mind was already slipping away. “Foul. . . Beast. I will see you destroyed”.

She heard that laugh again as the darkness took her.

The Shade was always morphing into something new, always seeking ways to extend its reach. Was this not why the Gaolers were created? To fight and contain what the Shade had tainted? Vera dedicated herself to this mandate, her silver chains glinting coldly as they levitated around her, poised like great serpents ready to strike. “Foul beast!” She called with a snarl before the first chain snapped forth, snaring something enrobed in the shadows before her. Flesh sizzled where the chain contacted the creature’s dark scales and it hissed, revealing a glint of red eyes and numerous rows of needle-like teeth. A vampire.

“Your presence has plagued this world for too long. Now you will perish at my hand.” Another silver chain dove towards the creature, a sharpened pendulum glinting from the last link. “No beast can escape from a Gaoler’s chains!”

The ground shook beneath the felled vampire, the red glow fading from its lifeless eyes as silver pierced its heart.

The villagers cheered. “Did you see? That Shade hunter has done it! She has vanquished the beast that plagued us! Please, accept this as a mark of our gratitude”. A satchel of gems and golden coins was thrust into Vera’s hands. “Now come, huntress! Tonight, we feast, for the vampire has fallen!”

Vera smiled. This was how she made a living - traveling and listened for rumors of the Shade’s corruption. She was dedicated to the hunt and when she found what she searched for, she would vanquish it.

“Did you hear? Another village has gone missing! I’m telling you, the Icefields are cursed, an entire village gone in the night!”

“Now hush, we don’t want to spread panic!”

Vera’s ears perked at the conversation and she sauntered towards a pair of Fae that sat at one of the tavern’s oaken tables. “What’s this about the Icefields?”

“I’d stay far away from there!” The first Fae cried, “They say a tragedy has fallen upon the palace of Moondore and it can no longer stave off the evils that descend from the mountain peaks! Entire villages are going missing in the night!”

Vera frowned. She was not an ice dragon, but she was still a Gaoler and she had certainly heard of the palace. It was a stronghold established to protect the citizens of the Icefields against the remnants of Shade that flourished high within the Coudscrape Craigs. “This is troublesome indeed”.

Despite the Fae’s warnings, she found herself on the next vessel headed towards the Southern Icefields.

Vera’s claws scraped against the ice as she wandered across the Snowsquall Tundra. The clans living here were spread far apart and the Gaoler traveled for several days before the lights from a small logging town finally glinted off the snow.

“Oh dear” an old Tundra called when she saw the Gaoler wandering out of the blizzard. “I’m afraid we don’t get many visitors around these parts. Tavern’s been closed for some time now dearie. But you can stay with me if you like! Please, call me Sadie.”

The elderly Tundra huffed as she set a kettle over the fire to boil before turning to Vera with a smile. “So, what brings you all the way out to these parts dear? You certainly seem to have a purpose”.

“I’ve come to investigate a rumor”.

The Tundra’s face darkened, “Oh. Might you be here about the disappearances? I’d warn you to stay out of that business, but I can see that you’re a determined one. There’ll be no dissuading you.” Sadie sighed. “Suppose it’s best to tell you what I know. My dear, have you ever heard of a Barghest?”

Vera listened. Some said that the Barghests emerged from high in the mountain peaks while other postulated that they came from the palace of Moondore itself. They descended in the night, their eerie calls echoing through the snow and fog. “It feels like they pull you to another world, as if those caught in their trance are ensnared in the strangest of dreams”. Sadie’s eyes stared off somewhere far away as she spoke.

“And how do I find them?”

The Tundra stared into the Vera’s eyes. “If you stay long enough, I am sure they will find you.”

When at last the beasts came, Vera thought herself prepared. She found herself dreaming. It must have been a dream, she told herself, for the halls that she wandered were unfamiliar. Her reflection flickered dimly upon a series of cracked mirrors as she passed.

She found a room lined with panels of polished obsidian and a massive orrery-like device that reflected the starlight onto those dark walls. There was a sound, like shattering glass.

“You have a darkness within you.”

A voice echoed as something shimmered in the periphery of Vera’s vision. She was quick to launch a silver chain towards the movement, only for it to strike against something that shattered into a thousand glass fragments. She inspected the shards, but found no trace of movement.

“Show yourself!” Vera snarled.

It was then that the glass around her snapped closed. It surrounded Vera like the jaws of a bear trap and there was no time to react as it formed into the head of a massive beast, its teeth easily piercing her flesh. A moment later she was dangling from its mouth before it shook her once and threw her against the wall.

It should have been a minor injury, but Vera struggled to get to her feet and her vision grew blurred. Had she hit her head? Yes, she must have. Her thoughts trailed off as a piercing pain filled her mind. “Wha-t did you do to me?”

Her heart hammered and her blood felt like fire searing through her veins. It was as if her body were reacting to something. Those incessant whispers grew louder inside her mind and Vera could only scream to drown them out. The form of that beast loomed over her. It laughed, its lips pulled back in a cruel smile. It was the last thing she saw before she slipped into unconsciousness.

The beast called Alabaster watched carefully. She had debated simply killing the huntress, as she had with so many before her. Yet, this one she found interesting. She watched as the curse from her bite seared through the Gaoler’s body. She should not have been able to contract such a curse. . . And yet her body still twisted and morphed until she was a Gaoler no longer. Her own dark magic leaked from her like tar, now far beyond what Vera had learned to control.

“I only gave you a little push” Alabaster smiled. “This was inside of you all along, just waiting to be set free”.
