 Elena gave him the idea. He'd never give her any credit, of course - he was too proud - and at any rate, it was he who thought of it. Elena gave him the inspiration.

As much as he fancied himself an engineer, he had to admit his failure at the one key engineering feat that sustained the clan: the redirection and maintenance of the waterfall at the clan's doorstep.

Elena had succeeded not by dint of ingenuity or resourcefulness, but strong water magic. Kaivu was never satisfied with the solution - there had to be something simpler, more elegant - but he had to admit it worked, and well.

What else could elemental magic do? What other problems, big and small, could it resolve? And how could it profit the clan?

Born to less-than-nurturing parents, Mari grew to be very motherly, claiming the position of hatchling caretaker long before she had hatchlings of her own. Whether they are the offspring of her clanmates and friends, newborn members of the clan, or staying just a short time, Mari cares for them attentively and tenderly.

Strong and fiercely protective, as soon as the hatchlings under her care are old enough, Mari ensures that they are well able to defend themselves before journeying away from the clan or to join a deity. She is a patient teacher, unlike her training counterpart Kalio, though she often puts herself in considerable danger to prevent her trainees from being harmed.
