Biography
There's a dragon in my quarters, and they shouldn't be there. Fabric rustles against their fur, and their padding feet suggests Tundra. Loosing my blades from their sheaths, I advance, rolling my neck in anticipation of the fight. The soft noises continue, and I hear the rustle of parchment. Flinging open the door, I face my opponent- or does he face me?• • • With the crash of a wave comes a spark of silver, and I block clumsily with the hilt of one blade. It’s rare that anything makes me clumsy, and I flick the enemy metal away, returning with a slice right below his chin. “Hello. That’s my room.” He jabs at my stomach and I twirl around him. “Yes. Yes, I suppose it is. Is there anything I do to pardon myself of that?” I snort and swipe at his foreleg, but he spins away. “Give me whatever you took and get off the ship.” “No can do. I need these things.” He tries to take off, but I reach with the hook of one blade and pull him down, ripping his leggings. “You owe me clothes!” “You owe me my stuff.” He rolls on his soft wings and comes up with a slice at me that bites my side. “Come on, you seem a like-minded corsair. I’d hate to have to kill you.” “I dare you to try,” I say, bringing both futao to block a powerful overhead slam, “and so far no one who dared has survived.” “Evidently.” He twirls and darts at my other side, but I counter with a hook that spins his blade over me. “I’m anything but no one, though.” “Then who do I have the honor of slaying?” My cut is beginning to throb. “Waterhopper. King of the Northern Seas, Flag-Bearing Reaper. I go by many names.” He leaps backwards, closer to the foredeck, and I advance eagerly. “Flag-Bearing? The only flag I see upon you is that of a thief.” As I lunge he does the same, and avoiding his sword costs me my aim. “Thief? Surely a fellow honorable pirate can understand- I am a master of my art, not a crude thief.” “I beg to differ. Pray give me a reason to call you of my class.” He pauses in his motion, and I take that as an opportunity to slice at his leg, though he dodges my blow easily. “Unchivalrous! To strike at a dragon in thought.” I lean back on my haunches, coils tense. “I have with me nothing but three golden timekeepers. I bartered quite a lot that I could procure them, and I know they’ll sell for more.” “Why?” My futao drop to my sides. “Nothing but greed, I suppose?” “No. I am building a clan of my own. Please, support me in this.” His eyes become softer, even plaintive. “A pirate, building a clan?” “Yes. A pirate, building a clan.” And with that he disappears into the dusky sea sky.
