Biography

that's my desktop background now, it matches so perfectly,, the accent, the scene..
it/they

One by one, we drop like flies
The sickness spreading through the hives
Our minds abuzz we flutter and scatter
Only to all become a pile of organic matter

Seva looked at its old home, its hive. What had seemed to be a virus had swept through, killing all bar one.

Seva.

They contracted it a little earlier than the others, and it had observed the carnage, the destruction. It was a miracle it had even survived. Their wings were tattered, their mane was dull and short and their appetite was fleeting.

It all started with a general lethargy with a lowered appetite, then progressing to trouble swallowing and saliva gathering in the infected dragons mane near their snout, often binding parts of hair to their face. Eventually they became unable to eat or drink due to their swallow reflex being disrupted.

Upon reading through countless pieces of literature, Seva discovered the cause must've been a parasite, namely Trichomonas.
This parasite had run rampant, and had decimated a species of bird, the Greenfinch, but affected Chaffinches and Goldfinches as well.
It sadly recalled its closest friend fed the local birds, with particular interest in finches.

The parasite had hopped species, with fatal implications. Seva has not been able to find a reason why it survived. Perhaps a genetic resistance, but that didn't seem to hold up, since none of their relatives survived.

Pure chance. It was through luck that it had survived.
Whether this supposed luck was 'good' or 'bad', that has yet to be determined by Seva.

Notes:
This is a real parasite that is severely impacting finches, in particular Greenfinch populations. I wanted to write about it as a way to raise awareness about this.*
It is easily spread at bird feeders due to the sheer quantity of different birds visiting.
In Ireland, where I live, Greenfinches are amber listed.

An excerpt from BirdWatch Ireland about this. It has a lot of useful information about the topic. Here is the page I got it from.
"The parasite makes it difficult for birds to eat, initially leading to difficulty swallowing but as birds struggle to eat they will become colder and less energetic, with symptoms worsening over several days. Infected birds will be inclined to fluff up their feathers more and be slower than other birds to fly away when disturbed. They often have bits of food stuck around their bill. Unfortunately, the bird will eventually succumb to the infection, so the best thing to do is minimise the risk of other birds getting sick."
