CARULATA Role

87617338.png

xxx At the edge of the Carrion Canyon lies a river. This river runs the length of the mountainous rift dividing light and lightning from one another. It also serves a tether between ocean and freshwater ocean. Between the outer sea that encapsulates Sornieth and the Sea of a Thousand Currents.

Carulata would never see this river. She was bound to House Wavecaller and although not a particularly important royal she was designated a somewhat interesting fate. When the eruption of Sandsurges crossed the world, it was decreed that a Wavecaller should become one. Mainly for image, for study, for things unrelated to harvesting the innate drive that Sandsurge's hold. So it was Carulata found herself as one.

STORY Everyone has one to tell.

oh no she's cute
#3670563
She felt unchanged at first, only awkward in her new dragon form but nothing else amiss. Then she felt a tug. Towards Lightning. Towards storms. She asked Wevlen to take her deep within some and was delighted as the echoing fabric of lightning rolled along her new fins and spine. Though it was like her being was torn. She equally yearned for water, for the depths of the ocean.

xxx When evening settled on the isles and the sun began to descend Carulata ventured into the pier. She waded deep into the reefs and beyond to the dark ocean where she commanded a faraway spirit. "Sing to me." So the river sang.

Churning water rushing along the cascading waterfalls bordering light and lightning. A marvelous construction of wood and ash hummed as energy was pulled from the water into it. Along the channels of the river a steamboat pushed onward at a lazy speed. Carulata could almost taste the fragrant wines and decedent desserts enjoyed by it's passengers. It was enticing, it appealed to her senses.

Then the dream faded as Hehu struggled to pull her to shore. The spiral was working with others, and Carulata felt the realization dawning on her she was being saved from having almost drowned. Immediately she collected herself and channeled her mastery over water to cure her lungs of this mistake. Breeze herself took one look at Carulata and sighed. "I cannot undo this. It's... You water dragons call it a 'Mind Tsunami', in wind medicine I learned it as a 'knot of scales', though they are one and the same.." Breeze was not one to hesitate in her work. "It happens sometimes with breed changes. Especially for demigods such as yourself. It's the confusion of elements. Give yourself more time to adjust to your new form and you will feel back to normal."

Carulata shook her head. This was not a mere urge of confusion over using a breed change scroll. She had seen such before. Had witnessed as another Ba was placed within their house and refused the right to leave as they struggled with flight and it was feared they would crash. So Carulata accepted Breeze's advices but resolved to look deeper into the matter herself. Quietly, without the draw of attention.

The following morning the Sandsurge dawned her most plain attire and walked into House Wavecaller's library unannounced. The smell of lingering incense and faint motes of magic from book binding touched her nose. She was not here to drink in their scents but for a moment she waited at the entranceway uncertainly. She had no idea where to look for her condition but she wagered a guess that looking in the lightning section might be a strong start. Ba'Yachaziel almost silently hummed when he saw a dragon approach and skirted out of the sandsurge's way. Carulata almost felt guilty interrupting the inventor's work but her mission was of upmost importance and she was consumed with the desire to solve her condition- whatever it truly was.

Her curiosity lead her all over the library. From lightning folktales to broader legends to mythical creatures yet none of this aided her. She spied an ice covered Banescale and the Palace healer Hasi speaking of binds of fate. The idea was ridiculous since Tidelord had long vanished beneath his waves, no prophecies delivered since. Yet the idea clung to the recesses of her brain, she longed for answers and something to do with 'fate' might be it.

She consulted both Themisto and Floret. Themisto proclaimed he could not aid her unless she wished for a matchmaking reading but he pitied her plight and allowed her to question him nonetheless. From him she learned unexplained visions were said to sometimes be the beckoning of a deity. Though that would mean either Tidelord himself or Stormcatcher desired something of her. Next she visited Floret. The Pearlcatcher often worked within the heart of the city and Carulata was relieved to find him within the Palace.

Ba'Floretel warned of similar things to Themisto. He was no scryer. If she truly wished for answers she would bother the heir. Ba'Remliel-sin held so lofty a position the thought mortified Carulata entirely. She refused such aggressively and Floret's whimsical smile curved into a grin of laughter. "Very well, so be it. I am no scryer sister, but I shall attempt." The pearlcatcher gasped her hand and concentrated. A coiling of magic rolled through the air. The sharp pokes of unchanneled energy with no particular element guiding them snapped at both dragons, but was otherwise harmless.

When Floret seemed to recollect his senses he frowned. It was unlike him and it bothered Carulata deeply. "You know of Ka'Morphel. I advise you seek him out."

Carulata found her dragon of interest in the kitchen. Safari was busy putting together a most unappetizing block of nutrients and Morpheus was quietly helping, skittering out of the way whenever the Bogsneak needed to wade past. "Ka'Morphel, I need your help." The veil seemed to hear her, his water blessed eyes gazing in her general direction. He nodded silently and followed to the pantry where, although not ideal, Carulata explained her situation. He did not summon a great swath of magic nor require a hair or a scale to cast a spell. The wave-blessed merely nodded in agreement and told her his recommendation.

--

Ba'Luciel was not nearly as intimidating as Carulata had been lead to believe. She had of course seen their leader before. It was impossible not to have attended at least one courtly hearing. She seemed small and withered and breathtakingly mortal which of all the points was the one that shocked Carulata the most. The Sandsurge almost felt overdressed, with her cascading silks of shells and coral knotted together fashionably. Though that wasn't to say Ba'Luciel was not wearing her best. Even if her energy radiated mortal she was adorn in an outfit for the gods. Shells and coral were staples for House Wavecaller, but Luciel's was fashioned into a crown. She wore a bleached whalebone mask and a gown dyed in magic waters. It glistened and glowed as she moved like luminescent algae.

While Carulata puzzled Luciel sized her up. At last she inquired what the Sandsurge sought from her. She recalled her purpose. "Larkspur is not enough." She confidently informed her. "I request a journey to Lightning." Her leader-sister beheld her with a faint smile of amusement.

"Then you will need a guide."

I actually really like the 'cheaper' option here so I'll go with originally was the more expensive scry and then for story purposes transforms into the cheaper one
