Their prayers fall on deaf ears.

The Plaguebringer wants only survival, wants only the strongest. The other gods hold fast to their own designs, their own demands. Not a single one challenged the Machinist, the Twelfth, the Heretic.

How can mortals hope to survive the machinations of a god? How can they face the unfaceable?

The Court tried. They tried so, so hard, but when the faces staring back at you from across the battlefield are your friends, your siblings, your parents and children and lovers, how can you in good conscience raise a claw to kill them when you know they are not wholly themselves?

They begged for Her aid, and neither the Plaguebringer nor her favored subjects came to help.

The survivors leave Plague. They leave the flight that fights only for itself and leaves its own clans to suffer in the name of strength. They leave the flight ruled by a squabbling council of would-be royalty that cares only for its own power.

They know not to where they head, but after weeks of wandering, of searching for a place that might one day be a home, they stumble, bodies and hearts aching, to the edge of the Sea of A Thousand Currents.

And so they abandon god, and leave for a place in which god has abandoned all.
